The Philips Baristina BAR300/00 is a very compact (18 cm wide) espresso machine that grinds beans with a ceramic grinder, then tamps and brews espresso or lungo at a swipe of the handle. Owners and TechRadar praise its simplicity, easy cleaning, small footprint and looks, and many enjoy the coffee. The grind is fixed, there are only two drinks and no milk system, and Expert Reviews found the espresso merely average. Recurring complaints are grounds spilling into the cup and lukewarm drinks, with some reports of leaks within months. It suits black-coffee drinkers upgrading from pods, not those wanting milk drinks or control over their shot. Long-term reliability has not been independently assessed.
Strengths
Genuinely simple: one swipe grinds, tamps and brews, the most-praised aspect across UK store reviews.
Very small footprint (18 x 34.5 x 38 cm) and easy cleaning with no internal brew group.
Fresh-ground beans and a 16 bar pump give espresso many owners and TechRadar rate as flavourful and consistent.
Show all (4)
Widely sold in the UK with a 2-year guarantee and 30-day returns at major retailers.
Things to consider
Only espresso and lungo, with no milk frother, steam wand or hot water; milk drinks need a separate frother or bundle.
Fixed grind size and pressurised basket limit shot quality and control; Expert Reviews found the espresso only average.
Recurring reports of ground coffee spilling around or into the cup.
Show all (5)
Some owners find drinks not hot enough, and the tank, hopper and maximum drink size small.
Some reports of leaks or failures within months and of a plasticky build or fragile portafilter; many store reviews are incentivised.
Who is it for, and who is it not for?
Good for
Black-coffee or americano drinkers moving up from pod machines who want fresh beans without learning barista skills.
Small kitchens where counter space is tight.
May not suit
Anyone who mainly drinks lattes or cappuccinos and doesn't want to buy a separate frother.
Espresso enthusiasts who want to adjust grind, dose or temperature.
Households making many large mugs a day, given the small tank, hopper and drink size.
The BAR300/00 is the white Philips Baristina espresso machine. The same machine in black is BAR300/60, and BAR303/00 and BAR303/60 bundle it with a separate milk frother. In the UK the black version often costs less than the white.
It has a 16 bar pump and a ceramic burr grinder. Swiping the portafilter handle starts automatic grinding, tamping and brewing of espresso or lungo, with an intensity boost button.
The grind size is pre-set and cannot be adjusted by the user. TechRadar and Expert Reviews list this as a drawback, and Expert Reviews notes a pressurised basket and non-standard portafilter.
Ease of use is by far the most common praise in store reviews at Argos, Amazon, Currys and John Lewis. Owners describe it as one-touch and uncomplicated.
Many owners praise rich, strong espresso with good crema. TechRadar found the coffee consistently well extracted. Expert Reviews found it only 'very okay', comparable with a good pod machine.
Owners and reviewers find it easy to clean, with no internal brew group and a rinse-able portafilter. They also value the small countertop footprint and attractive design.
A minority of reviewers report leaking or the machine stopping working within a few months, some on replacement units. Several also describe frustrating warranty support. These are individual reports, not a measured failure rate.
Some reviewers call the machine plasticky. A black-variant buyer says the plastic portafilter snaps easily, another finds its release temperamental, and others mention a small drip tray that splashes.
TechRadar gave it Editor's Choice for simplicity, design and value. T3 praised its consistently smooth espresso. Expert Reviews called it disappointingly average and overpriced for those wanting genuinely good espresso.
Many store reviews come from review programmes or Philips syndication: most Currys reviews are product-tester reviews, half of the visible Argos reviews were collected in a promotion, and most John Lewis reviews are syndicated from Philips sites. Store ratings may therefore be more positive than typical owner experience.

Owners mostly praise how simple the Baristina is: one swipe grinds, tamps and brews, with no settings to learn. Many say it makes strong, flavourful espresso with good crema and is a clear step up from pods. Its slim footprint, good looks and easy cleaning are frequent positives. Recurring complaints are ground coffee spilling around or into the cup, drinks that are not hot enough, and the narrow menu of espresso and lungo with no milk or grind adjustment. Some find the tank, hopper or drink size small, and some find the build, portafilter or drip tray flimsy. A minority report leaks or failures within months and frustrating warranty support.

Really like this. My wife only drinks black coffee so is perfect for her as was bought for her birthday. You just need to add milk and you have a white americano simple. Was straight forward to set up and get started. Highly recommended.

Only had this a couple of days, but the coffee it produces is excellent. So easy to use, and to clean. I only drink black coffee, so the lack of milk options isn't an issue for me. There are only 4 options - espresso, stronger espresso, lungo, and stronger lungo - but it does them really well.

I bought this a week ago and I can say that price/quality is quite good. If you like to drink espresso or americano and you don't want anything complicated, I would say this is the right one. …

I am extremely pleased with my purchase it is simple to use and provides a satisfying brew of coffee. My only complaint is that I ordered a white Machine and I received a black one. But overall very good and very pleased
C***4/517 April 2026ArgosPromotion review
Really good machine. It's super helpful to have the integrated coffee beans grinder. … Only downside is that occasionally some of the grinded coffee powder falls around the mug. Also, I'd love for it to have a rinse function without the portafilter in.

The portafilter is plastic and snaps easily

I am a little sceptical about the portafilters automatic release, it has a few times been a little funny to get in an out or fully lock into place and I fear this won't last for long. … I am very happy with quality of coffee it produces …
L***4/512 April 2026ArgosBlack BAR300/60; promotion review
… The main issues with the machine for me personally fall with the drip tray not being big enough, the coffee drips and splashes over the full base … Overall it's a great, stylish coffee machine that doesn't take up much bench space.

Not really fit for use. The automatic sliding mechanism is great for keeping the internals clean, but ultimately it doesn't work... Kept throwing grounds all over the side and into my cup. Lastly, whilst this is technically a bean to cup, there is no way to adjust the grind and it's simply push whatever you can get through a pressurised basket. …

I bought mine last year(2025) January in Holland, it broke(leaking) after 6 months. I got my money back and I bought another one, it broke again same problem now within 4 months and not even used it a lot. It's a shame, bc it's a product that makes a nice coffee and it's so easy to use and to clean.

I love this machine. I was a little nervous when I saw it had no reviews, but Philips is a good brand… it makes the best espresso I have had at home, all with the ease of pushing one button… The portafilter is super easy to clean…

Had it about 3 weeks. Working well so far. Easy to use. Only 2 levels of coffee but obviously can be topped up with hot water. Water tank holds 6-8 cups. Like this little machine a lot.

We love our new coffee machine. It has the option to do a double shot so keeps everyone happy. Easy to use. It's also very attractive, curved lines and not industrial looking.

This product looks really good so I thought it would operate really well however first few times it worked great but then after a few uses the coffee started to spill out after grinding so now tiny bits of coffee grounds get into drinks! …

I love this! I had a machine from another brand but it was very big and very complicated to use. … However there are some not so good things-the water tank is small meaning that it needs to be filled more often, and the amount of coffee it makes is also quite small …

I've been using this espresso machine for a couple of weeks now. It produces brilliant espresso—literally perfect every time—but the lack of settings means I need to get another coffee machine to make larger drinks. … programming the volume to the maximum produces a drink that's far too watered down and still only fills half a mug. …

We treated ourselves to this coffee machine, very pleased with performance, easy to use, fab coffee. Looks great in my kitchen, my only gripe is that the manufacturers have put a black lead on a beautiful white machine, why!!

The Philips Baristina - I'm Not Angry, Just Disappointed
The Philips Baristina offers an automated, hassle-free workflow that grinds and brews coffee with a single swipe of the handle. However, it features a non-adjustable grinder that produces very coarse coffee grounds, alongside a proprietary pressurised portafilter and uneven water distribution. Consequently, it achieves poor extraction levels and fails to deliver genuine espresso quality, making it poor value for money.
The Philips Baristina is a compact and exceptionally quiet espresso machine featuring an integrated grinder and very fast preheating. However, it can only make one coffee at a time, lacks a milk frother, and takes longer to brew than many rival machines. Additionally, its predominantly plastic construction feels like it could be sturdier.
I Tried New Philips Baristina Espresso Machine (It Did Everything For Me)
The Philips Baristina is a compact, easy-to-use coffee machine designed as a stepping stone between pod machines and manual espresso setups. It automates weighing, grinding, tamping, and brewing with fresh beans at 16 bars of pressure, delivering decent espresso with good crema and remarkably quiet operation.
Philips Baristina Review | Is This the Nespresso Killer?
The Philips Baristina is a compact espresso machine designed as an easy-to-use alternative to single-use pod systems without the pod waste. It brews tasty espresso with rich crema and includes a convenient puck-ejection mechanism on the brew handle. While the ceramic grinder cannot be adjusted and the milk frother requires a separate power outlet, it is a convenient and capable unit.
