The Breville Barista Max (VCF126) is a semi-automatic espresso machine with a built-in grinder, a 15-bar pump, a thermoblock heater, a 2.8 L tank and a manual steam wand. It suits people moving up from pods who want fresh-ground espresso and milk drinks at home. Owners widely praise the coffee quality, ease of use once learnt and value, especially on offer. Expect a learning curve with grind, dose and milk. The grinder often scatters grounds, and the steam wand divides opinion. The build is plastic-heavy and the machine is tall. A minority report leaks, grinder faults or breakdowns at around 18 months to 2 years, so registering for Breville's 2-year warranty is worthwhile. Long-term durability is not covered by any independent test.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
A 15-bar pump espresso machine with a 1300 W thermoblock heater, 2.8 L water tank and 58 mm portafilter.
Breville says the built-in Tap & Go grinder has 30 grind sizes and grinds straight into the portafilter. Retailers list a 250 g bean hopper.
Breville claims Temp IQ for stable brew temperature with gentle pre-infusion, plus 1-shot, 2-shot and manual shot options. Tech Advisor reports the brew temperature can be changed from 88 to 96°C via a button sequence, and that the machine has no pressure gauge.
There is a single heater, so the machine cannot brew and steam at the same time.
It is fairly large: 407 mm tall, 347 mm wide, 322 mm deep and 7.75 kg, with only a 0.7 m power cord. Some owners found it too tall to fit under wall cupboards or bigger than expected.
Most reviewers say it makes good to excellent espresso and milk drinks once dialled in, often comparing it to coffee-shop drinks. A minority found the espresso weak, sour or not strong enough.
Many owners call it easy to use and a good first 'real' espresso machine. A recurring caveat is that grind size, dosing and milk texturing take practice, and several say the instructions on frothing and setup are poor.
A repeated complaint is that the grinder sprays grounds over the machine and worktop. The portafilter must be held against the grind cradle during grinding, and there is no auto-grind.
Some buyers report grinders that would not grind, ground too coarsely or stopped working soon after purchase.
Several owners report leaks from the group head, steam wand or a top valve, or breakdowns after roughly 18 months to 2 years. Some were unable to get it repaired. Others report years of use with only one repair. These are individual reports and do not establish a failure rate.
Opinions on the steam wand are split. Some owners say it froths well enough for latte art, while others call it weak, noisy or 'horrible', or say it needs a knack.
Several reviewers find it plastic-heavy for the price, or say the finish scratched or the group head rusted quickly. Others describe it as sturdy and well made.
Many buyers consider it good value, especially when bought on offer, as an entry-level machine with a grinder. Some critics feel it is overpriced next to the Sage/Breville Barista Express.
Several owners say grinding and steaming are loud. A few describe it as not very noisy.
Tech Advisor says it delivers a lot for its price and is reliable, easy to use and consistent. It recommends it for people upgrading from a pod machine rather than hardcore coffee enthusiasts, and notes limited cup-warming space on top.
Sold in the UK by Amazon.co.uk, Currys and AO, among others. Argos and John Lewis do not stock it. Breville UK's own page points to retailers rather than selling directly.
Which? records a release date of July 2020. Breville's range now also includes the Barista Sense VCF187, which Amazon labels as a newer model of this item.
Best suited to pod or instant coffee drinkers who want fresh-ground espresso and are willing to learn manual dosing, tamping and milk steaming. Less suited to those wanting one-touch convenience or a long-life prosumer machine.
Breville offers a 2-year warranty if the product is registered within 90 days of purchase. Currys lists a 2-year guarantee, while AO's spec table lists a 1-year manufacturer warranty.

Owners mostly like the Barista Max as an affordable first step into proper espresso. They praise fresh-ground coffee that rivals coffee shops, the built-in grinder, the large water tank and simple controls once learnt. Expect a learning curve: getting the grind, dose and milk texture right takes practice, and several owners found the instructions unhelpful. The most common practical complaint is that the grinder scatters grounds over the machine and worktop. Opinions on the steam wand are split between good microfoam and weak or noisy frothing. Some find the build plastic-heavy or prone to scratches. A smaller but serious group reports leaks, grinder faults or breakdowns after around 18 months to 2 years, sometimes with no repair option. Long-term owners also report years of daily use.

Easy-to-use great first espresso machine. Great first espresso machine! I bought this from Amazon Resale as used very good. It's basically brand new but without a box or instructions… We love this machine. It's easy to use and clean, has massive water capacity and brews a great cup of coffee… The milk frother takes some practice and it's important to use the right milk…

A cheap product that produces crappy coffee. Was unable to purchase the Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine, which I already owned. Sadly this one is a pale shadow, much less functionality and far lower quality. Bottom line - far less satisfying to use and the resulting coffee product is not worth all the effort.

Ideal machine. Lovely machine, works very well, easy to use, makes great coffee, obviously depends on the choice of beans! Great value for money, easy to assemble and clean. Fits nicely on my workbench, not taking up lots of space, well made, and sturdy, holds a good amount of water, and not very noisy.

Amazing machine. … makes seriously good coffee… It's relatively loud, and needs semi-regular upkeep like cleaning, cleaning the wand, regular filling of the water tank, changing the filter etc… I use it multiple times a day, and have since I got it about 6 years ago. Only broke down once, which was semi expensive to fix (£150 or so, from memory) but again I still think it's worth it and great value for money…

Worth A Buy. Great First Machine, but will definitely invest a bit more money on a better one in a few years if this one doesnt pack in before. You ideally do need to buy some additional stuff, so get this product only while its on offer… Cleaning is simple. Can be noisy though no louder than a pod machine… I've made some decent coffees with it but its definitely a practise makes great. This machine will not do a perfect coffee/espresso in my opinion…

Embarrassment to the Breville Line. The Barista Max is trash compared to the Barista Express. 1) It has no auto grind setting so you have to hold the handle down at an angle while it grinds and it spits coffee grinds all over the place making a mess every single time you try to use it. 2) thepressure doesn't get high enough when it's making espresso, so I continually have soggy pucks every single time… 4) This thing is just a lot of plastic and very cheaply built. It is about three times the price it deserves to be for its functionality…

Coffee grinder not working as it should. We recently bought this coffee machine, but when we put the coffee in to grind, it comes out extremely coarse. We've already used half a bag of coffee, which is not cheap to be able to throw away. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

Did not meet our expectations, you had to guess the amount of coffee to grind , then the coffee dispenser , think they call it a puc, would be awash with water when you came to empty it so very very messy . We tried numerous times to get the balance right but just wasn’t having any of it, Wish we had paid the extra money to purchase another De Longhi coffee maker. Would not recommend this to anyone

So far a am happy with the product. Even though most of it is made of plastic .Very little metal. .But at the same time. It is recyclable when it is no longer in use. For what it is.Yes!,Good value for money.

Great coffee machine for home barista use. The built-in grinder is really convenient, and it handles both single and double shots well. Milk steaming is strong enough for latte art, I was even able to pour a swan design. Solid build quality and a great option if you want cafe style drinks at home.

Makes great coffee, with practice. You can vary many settings to suit your tastes.

So far so good . It makes very good coffee it is easy to use and the coffee taste fresh as there is a grinder built into it so you can grind your coffee to order. The steamer is very powerful and frothy the milk up beautifully if a slight delay when you turn the know to steam. Don't know about the longtivity just bought it fingers crossed it lasts a few years.

Good starter machine pours a good espresso steaming wand isn’t the best but you can still make a good coffee with it
G*** 3/5 23 June 2025 Currys Currys (Feefo)
Brilliant coffee machine makes good coffee and happy with my product I would of gave a 5 star rating but only reason I haven’t is because when I use the coffee grinder it puts the coffee granules in the puck ok but also sprays coffee granules all over my work service which is very frustrating as it means more cleaning other than the coffee grinder I’m happy with the product.

Great machine, easy to use, tasty coffee freshly ground, steamer is great, all round good product. Only minor problem was it didn’t fit on the worktop due to the height! So had to improvise
K*** 4/5 19 April 2024 Currys Currys (Feefo)
Great coffee machine, easy to use, easy to clean, water tank a great size, only reason for 4 star instead of 5, is the milk frother still isn't quite as good as the coffee shop, not quite powerful enough for coffee art, if that's your kind of thing
Customer 5/5 13 February 2024 Currys Currys (Feefo)
Loving this machine! After being shown how to make 'proper' coffee on a Sage machine, I was looking for a cheaper alternative. This machine is great - it takes a while to get the grind size right and the instructions on how to create microfoam are useless, but after a couple of weeks I'd got the hang of it and I'm producing coffee to a decent standard. It's really easy to use and a good price when on sale :-)

Good Points: Good coffee , simply to use, lovely big water tank which u can fill from the top and don't need to take out Improvement Points: The hose function to warm your milk is very very noisy like if having a conversation at the same time as heating the milk u need to shout

K*** 2/5 2 June 2022 Currys Currys (Feefo)
Good Points: Makes a great tasting coffee. Improvement Points: The machine is so messy. We took the first one we purchased back as we were convinced the grinder was faulty as it would cover everything as it ground the beans. Sadly the second machine also did the same. Such a disappointment.
S*** 2/5 8 January 2022 Currys Currys (Feefo)
Good Points: If you spend some time on understanding how the machine works it will be ok for bottom end market barista machines. It looks quite nice. Improvement Points: The grinder tray is made of plastic and requires pressure to release the beans. This is a weak point and will break. Overall it’s very plastic. I’d recommend spending a little extra for durability and a better machine.

Looks serious and is a heavy duty machine weighing in at 11kg. Makes great coffee (but this will be dependent on quality and freshness of beans). Examine each part carefully as instructions aren't great and they don't explain how to set up everything eg removing plug from water container. On using once, metal already scratched to take care when using as it does diminish the overall look. It's good at what it does - best bit is the bean grinder - but I don't feel it offers good value. …

I absolutely LOVE this machine it’s so flexible, versatile yet a lovely compact design that doesn’t take to much of my kitchen. It’s a very powerful machine, although it is a little nosey (to be expected from a great machine though). … The only thing to note is that it drips a bit from the steam wand and can damage the worktops so make sure to put it inwards or something under it to prevent this. …

We brought this on a black Friday deal 18 months ago and it's now leaking from a valve at the top. The warranty has ended so no one can replace it for us. I've used the Breville Barista Max for just over two years, and it's been a fairly enjoyable experience to date. The final cup of coffee depends on a few factors, the beans, the grind, the tamp, but once you get the handle in it you can produce a lovely cup of coffee. Unfortunately the machine has started leaking from the group head and also the wand. This should not happen after only 2 years. I have routinely cleaned the unit and completed the descaling cycle, so I look after it, and it's still failed. …

The Breville Barista Max is an affordable all-in-one espresso machine with an integrated grinder and milk steamer that delivers great performance for its price. It consistently produces smooth espresso with good crema and silky textured milk for cappuccinos and lattes. While the grinder can be slightly messy and clearance beneath the portafilter is tight, it offers exceptional value compared to more expensive alternatives.
YouTube · Review
The reviewer is very pleased with the Breville Barista Max after several weeks of use, highlighting the great taste of the coffee and its thoughtful design features. His only notable critique is that a knock box is not included with the machine, and the steam wand can get quite noisy. Overall, he considers it an excellent, easy-to-clean espresso machine that is well worth purchasing.

The Breville Barista Max makes it simple to prepare cafe-quality drinks at home in three easy steps. It features a built-in grinder with 30 adjustable settings, precise temperature control with coffee pre-infusion, and a cool-touch steam wand for milk frothing.
YouTube · Review
The Breville Barista Max is a solid espresso machine featuring a built-in grinder with 30 settings and Temp IQ shot control for consistent extraction. While the steam wand lacks temperature control and requires practice, and the machine can be a faff to keep clean, it delivers coffee shop-quality coffee at home once mastered.
