The Sage Barista Touch Impress with Cold Extraction (SES882) is a touchscreen espresso machine with a built-in grinder, assisted tamping, automatic milk texturing and five cold presets, including cold brew in under three minutes. Reviewers and owners agree it reliably makes excellent, coffee-shop-style drinks with little skill needed, and the cold brew is praised as smooth and sweet. The downsides: it is expensive and bulky, it cannot froth cold milk for iced lattes, one tester found it noticeably noisier and the touchscreen sluggish, and a minority of owners report early faults, lukewarm drinks or a clogging steam wand. It suits households that want guided, café-quality hot and iced coffee and are happy to pay for it. If you rarely drink cold coffee, the extra feature adds little. There is no independent long-term reliability data for this version yet.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
The cold-extraction version adds Cold Brew, Cold Espresso, Espresso Shakerato, Latte Shakerato and Espresso Martini to the 14 preset drinks. This is what sets it apart from the earlier Barista Touch Impress.
Sage says Cold Brew is extracted in under 3 minutes and Cold Espresso in just under 2 minutes.
TechRadar found the cold-brewed coffee noticeably sweeter and smoother than hot-brewed coffee and called it authentic, though not quite as full-bodied as cold brew from the Jura J10. A few UK buyers also praise the cold brew.
The built-in grinder uses Baratza European precision burrs with 30 grind settings, with a 340 g bean hopper and a 2 L water tank.
Sage says ThermoJet heating reaches extraction temperature in 3 seconds. Expert Reviews found the machine ready to go in around five seconds after switch-on.
Auto MilQ textures milk hands-free, with settings for dairy, almond, oat and soy, 8 texture levels and 40–75 °C temperature control.
The Impress Puck System applies an assisted 10 kg tamp. TechRadar called it clean, effective and satisfying to use, and Expert Reviews measured an even 10 kg tamp.
UK buyers at John Lewis, Currys and Amazon most often praise coffee-shop quality drinks, often compared favourably with pod machines and older bean-to-cup machines.
Applies to the model family
Buyers repeatedly say the touchscreen guides them through grinding, brewing and cleaning, so beginners and whole families can use it.
Applies to the model family
A minority of buyers report early faults: a grinder jamming within 30 days, water delivery stopping after a few months, a unit that would not switch on, and units replaced under warranty. Several mention Sage replacing the machine. Many of the John Lewis reports may concern the earlier non-cold model in the same review pool.
Applies to the model family
Some reviewers say drinks or brew water are lukewarm even at the highest temperature setting.
Applies to the model family
A few users report the milk wand or nozzle blocking often, and one blames limescale from hard water for repeated breakdowns.
Applies to the model family
The machine cannot froth cold milk for iced drinks. TechRadar and Expert Reviews both note this, and so does a John Lewis buyer.
Expert Reviews found the new model significantly noisier than the original Barista Touch Impress, with a high-pitched rasp rather than a low thrum.
The machine is bulky (36 x 34 x 41.5 cm, about 11 kg). The rear-mounted 2 L water tank can be awkward to reach, especially under wall cabinets.
Expert Reviews found the touchscreen sluggish and the separate hot water and steam buttons small. It also notes there is no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Reviewers disagree on dairy milk. TechRadar says AutoMilq works well for plant milk but does not seem to cope well with dairy, while Expert Reviews found dairy froth as good as on the earlier model.
This is a premium machine, priced around £1,200 new at the UK retailers checked. Expert Reviews calls it overpriced but brilliant, TechRadar scores its value 3.5/5, and many buyers call it expensive but worth it.
It comes with a 54 mm portafilter, 480 ml milk jug, single and dual wall baskets, a water filter, a Razor trimming tool and a full cleaning and descaling kit, plus a 2-year repair warranty.
A John Lewis buyer notes the machine does not detect which filter basket is fitted, so choosing the wrong size wastes a shot.
Applies to the model family
The John Lewis rating and reviews for this listing include reviews from 2023–2024. That predates the cold-extraction launch reviewed in mid-2025, so the pool almost certainly includes the earlier Barista Touch Impress (SES881).

User experience
See the common points first, then read the original reviews yourself.
Summarised from the 123 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 123.
Owners mainly praise the coffee itself: many say it matches or beats coffee shops and is a clear step up from pod or older bean-to-cup machines. The guided touchscreen, assisted tamping and automatic milk texturing make it easy for beginners and whole households. The few who mention the cold brew and cold espresso presets like them. The main complaints are reliability, with some units failing early (grinder jams, water delivery stopping, a unit that would not switch on) and being replaced by Sage. Others mention lukewarm drinks, a steam wand that clogs, especially in hard-water areas, and no cold milk foam for iced drinks. Many call it expensive but worth it. Most John Lewis reviews come from a pool shared with the earlier non-cold model.
Summarised from 123 reviews. The summary is drawn from opinions that recur in the reviews read; each theme shows how many reviews mention it. These counts are not a rate and do not apply to every unit.
123 unique text reviews: John Lewis 100 (API pages 1–5, newest first, deduplicated by review ID; pool shared with SES881), Currys 13 (Feefo, both listings; 4 rating-only excluded), Amazon.co.uk 10 (all visible UK texts; 1 duplicate removed). John Lewis theme counts are approximate hand counts. None was purely about delivery or the seller.

Such a stylish & easy to use machine.

Bought as a present for my husband as we were fed up with overpaying for Nespresso pods. The coffee is infinitely better from this machine and the coffee making process truly intuitive. It knows if it's grinding the coffee too slowly or quickly, and tells you exactly how to adjust the settings for a perfect cup. Completely idiot proof!

…The milk steamer is probably the stand out feature for us giving perfect microfoam maximizing the quality of our chosen beans.… If I was being picky it doesn't let you froth cold milk on the ice setting.

…I have one gripe and I'm told even the premium models are the same: the machine does not detect the size of filter basket you have installed so if you forget to select the right size your next coffee goes into the sink. Annoying oversight in my view for a premium m/c. Everything else is wonderfully easy and intuitive.…

Was working well but water delivery now stops after a few seconds from group head and steam wand. Sage customer service agreed to replace after a quick video call (and many pointless annoying questions about my coffee lifestyle unrelated to this issue). I hope this is the only reliability issue and doesn't happen again - fingers crossed!

This is our third Sage Barista. The first one lasted several years, the second less than one. Had a replacement under warranty which was no problem. Hope that was a blip and we were unlucky, because it is easy to operate and makes a beautiful coffee. Takes time to make more than one coffee. Expensive, but worth it if coffee is your thing!

We started off with the Barista Express which was excellent and lasted 10 years. We then swapped to the Oracle Touch (I would never buy this machine again) lasted 3 years, 2 repairs. So when it finally gave up I opted for the Impress. A great machine and a fantastic option for those wanting more automation. Cold brew also excellent.

…The only slight negative is that with the machine under kitchen wall cabinets the water container is a little tricky to handle.

This , and other Sage coffee machines are really good however my experience is that they have a very limited life span. I have bought 4 Sage coffee machines in the last 8 years, so on average I get 2 years of use. The first one lasted about a week but fair play to Sage support, they replaced it and provided a new one with an extension on the warranty. Seems to be working pretty well after some months now. Can't say how reliable it might be in the long run. The pull time seems to fluctuate quite a bit and the nozzle also clogs more frequently that I'd expect (though there is a tool included to resolve). Expensive as well
O*** 5/5 22 January 2026 Amazon Amazon.co.uk, Brushed Stainless SES882BSS4GUK1
Its really strange but sometimes "twice now" the temperature of the steamed milk is much hotter even though I have it set to 65c. I know this because when your brain knows what temperature it should be in your mouth and then you get a nasty surprise as it would be a lot hotter. Maybe something to watch out for.
