At a glance

The Sage Barista Touch Impress with Cold Extraction (SES882) is a touchscreen espresso machine with a built-in grinder, assisted tamping, automatic milk texturing and five cold presets, including cold brew in under three minutes. Reviewers and owners agree it reliably makes excellent, coffee-shop-style drinks with little skill needed, and the cold brew is praised as smooth and sweet. The downsides: it is expensive and bulky, it cannot froth cold milk for iced lattes, one tester found it noticeably noisier and the touchscreen sluggish, and a minority of owners report early faults, lukewarm drinks or a clogging steam wand. It suits households that want guided, café-quality hot and iced coffee and are happy to pay for it. If you rarely drink cold coffee, the extra feature adds little. There is no independent long-term reliability data for this version yet.

Strengths

  • Consistently praised coffee quality, helped by the guided grind and dose adjustment and an assisted 10 kg tamp
  • The touchscreen walks beginners through every step, so the whole household can use it
  • Five cold presets, including fast cold brew and cold espresso, with cold brew judged smooth and sweet
Show all (5)
  • Hands-free milk texturing with settings for dairy, almond, oat and soy and adjustable temperature and texture
  • Very fast heat-up and a well-equipped box, including a cleaning kit and trimming tool

Things to consider

  • Premium price; testers call it overpriced, though most owners feel it is worth it
  • Some owners report early faults and replacement units (grinder, water delivery)
  • Cannot froth cold milk for iced lattes
Show all (5)
  • Some users find drinks lukewarm, and the steam wand can clog, especially with hard water
  • Bulky, with a rear water tank that is awkward under wall cabinets; one test found it noisier than the earlier model and the touchscreen sluggish
Who is it for, and who is it not for?

Good for

  • Beginners or households who want café-style espresso and milk drinks without learning manual barista skills
  • Iced coffee, cold brew and espresso martini fans
  • Homes using several milk types, including plant milks

May not suit

  • Buyers who rarely drink cold coffee, since the cold presets are the main addition over the standard Barista Touch Impress
  • Anyone wanting cold-foam iced lattes
  • Kitchens with little worktop depth or low wall cabinets

Owners mainly praise the coffee itself: many say it matches or beats coffee shops and is a clear step up from pod or older bean-to-cup machines. The guided touchscreen, assisted tamping and automatic milk texturing make it easy for beginners and whole households. The few who mention the cold brew and cold espresso presets like them. The main complaints are reliability, with some units failing early (grinder jams, water delivery stopping, a unit that would not switch on) and being replaced by Sage. Others mention lukewarm drinks, a steam wand that clogs, especially in hard-water areas, and no cold milk foam for iced drinks. Many call it expensive but worth it. Most John Lewis reviews come from a pool shared with the earlier non-cold model.

How was this summary made?

Summarised from 123 reviews. The summary is drawn from opinions that recur in the reviews read; each theme shows how many reviews mention it. These counts are not a rate and do not apply to every unit.

123 unique text reviews: John Lewis 100 (API pages 1–5, newest first, deduplicated by review ID; pool shared with SES881), Currys 13 (Feefo, both listings; 4 rating-only excluded), Amazon.co.uk 10 (all visible UK texts; 1 duplicate removed). 1. m*** 5/5 22 August 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

Such a stylish & easy to use machine.

  2. A*** 5/5 20 July 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

Bought as a present for my husband as we were fed up with overpaying for Nespresso pods. The coffee is infinitely better from this machine and the coffee making process truly intuitive. It knows if it's grinding the coffee too slowly or quickly, and tells you exactly how to adjust the settings for a perfect cup. Completely idiot proof!

  3. J*** 5/5 16 July 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

…The milk steamer is probably the stand out feature for us giving perfect microfoam maximizing the quality of our chosen beans.… If I was being picky it doesn't let you froth cold milk on the ice setting.

  4. T*** 5/5 4 June 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

…I have one gripe and I'm told even the premium models are the same: the machine does not detect the size of filter basket you have installed so if you forget to select the right size your next coffee goes into the sink. Annoying oversight in my view for a premium m/c. Everything else is wonderfully easy and intuitive.…

  5. R*** 3/5 20 February 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

Was working well but water delivery now stops after a few seconds from group head and steam wand. Sage customer service agreed to replace after a quick video call (and many pointless annoying questions about my coffee lifestyle unrelated to this issue). I hope this is the only reliability issue and doesn't happen again - fingers crossed!

  6. D*** 1/5 16 January 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

  7. I*** 4/5 2 January 2026 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

This is our third Sage Barista. The first one lasted several years, the second less than one. Had a replacement under warranty which was no problem. Hope that was a blip and we were unlucky, because it is easy to operate and makes a beautiful coffee. Takes time to make more than one coffee. Expensive, but worth it if coffee is your thing!

  8. V*** 5/5 16 August 2025 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing; mentions cold brew

We started off with the Barista Express which was excellent and lasted 10 years. We then swapped to the Oracle Touch (I would never buy this machine again) lasted 3 years, 2 repairs. So when it finally gave up I opted for the Impress. A great machine and a fantastic option for those wanting more automation. Cold brew also excellent.

  9. R*** 5/5 4 August 2025 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing

…The only slight negative is that with the machine under kitchen wall cabinets the water container is a little tricky to handle.

  10. S*** 1/5 3 June 2025 John Lewis John Lewis pooled listing; may be the earlier non-cold model

I bought the Barista Touch Impress because of the great promotion and reviews that I had read about the machine - supposed would do everything required for an automated bean to cup experience. My experience has been VERY different.…

Had the machine less than 30 days, only use it once a day with fresh medium roast beans and the grinder has already broken, just jams up and makes an awful noise, cleaned it out thinking it must be jammed but there is nothing in the grinder.…

  14. S*** No rating 1 January 2025 John Lewis Syndicated from Sage; likely the earlier non-cold model

I have had this machine for several months and am unable to increase the water temperature. I have had it set to 4 but still produces lukewarm drinks. Am I doing something wrong?

  23. M*** H*** 3/5 1 September 2026 Amazon Amazon.co.uk, Brushed Stainless SES882BSS4GUK1

This , and other Sage coffee machines are really good however my experience is that they have a very limited life span. I have bought 4 Sage coffee machines in the last 8 years, so on average I get 2 years of use. When you are paying over £1,000.00 this is not acceptable and Sage customer service are not the easiest to deal with.…

  24. D*** V*** 3/5 22 February 2026 Amazon Amazon.co.uk, Brushed Stainless SES882BSS4GUK1

The first one lasted about a week but fair play to Sage support, they replaced it and provided a new one with an extension on the warranty. Seems to be working pretty well after some months now. Can't say how reliable it might be in the long run. The pull time seems to fluctuate quite a bit and the nozzle also clogs more frequently that I'd expect (though there is a tool included to resolve). Expensive as well

  25. O*** 5/5 22 January 2026 Amazon Amazon.co.uk, Brushed Stainless SES882BSS4GUK1

Its really strange but sometimes "twice now" the temperature of the steamed milk is much hotter even though I have it set to 65c. I know this because when your brain knows what temperature it should be in your mouth and then you get a nasty surprise as it would be a lot hotter. Maybe something to watch out for.

How we evaluate, and the limits

This page is compiled from manufacturer, store, review and video sources; every piece of information links to the source it was read from. Technical values are as stated by the manufacturer or store; user experiences are summarised from the reviews read and do not apply to every unit. We do not test products ourselves.
