The De'Longhi Magnifica S ECAM22.110.B is a long-running, entry-level bean-to-cup machine. It has a 15-bar pump, a built-in conical grinder, a 1.8-litre tank and a manual steam wand rather than an automatic milk system. Owners consistently praise the espresso and cappuccino quality, its simplicity once set up and its value. Expect a learning curve, though: the printed instructions are widely criticised, descaling prompts are frequent, long americanos can come out lukewarm and the pre-ground chute is messy. It suits espresso and americano drinkers happy to froth milk by hand, rather than anyone wanting one-touch lattes. In the UK it is sold mainly by De'Longhi and on Amazon, not on the high street. Reports on long-term durability are mixed, and no independent UK test was found.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
De'Longhi lists the ECAM22.110.B at 1450 W input power with a 15-bar pump.
It has a 1.8-litre water tank, a 250 g bean container and a grounds container that holds 14 portions.
Milk is frothed with a traditional manual steam wand (the 'Cappuccino System'), which also dispenses hot water. There is no automatic milk carafe, and only 2 drinks have one-touch buttons.
De'Longhi lists the machine at 230 x 430 x 340 mm and 9.299 kg, with a maximum cup height of 140 mm, so tall latte glasses may not fit.
De'Longhi states the built-in conical grinder has 13 settings, with 5 intensity levels and 3 brew temperatures. The machine also takes pre-ground coffee and lets you adjust coffee length.
It can brew two cups at once, and has a cup warmer, programmable water hardness and water-filter compatibility. It is operated with buttons and a dial.
UK reviewers most often say that, once set up, the machine is easy to use day to day, and some add that it is easy to clean.
Reviewers repeatedly praise the taste of the espresso and the crema, say the steam wand makes good cappuccino, and consider it good value for a bean-to-cup machine.
Reviewers describe it as a machine that does the basics well but has fewer options than more expensive models. One owner finds the long coffee/americano not hot enough without extra steps.
One reviewer reports that the 'out of beans' light only comes on when the hopper is completely empty, so a nearly empty hopper still brews, but the coffee is very weak.
Applies to the model family
Several owners needed a few brews, or some trial and error with grind and beans, before the coffee tasted right.
Some owners find it quieter than their previous De'Longhi machines; others note the grinding is loud.
Coffee Friend's ECAM22.110.SB is supplied with an EU plug plus a certified UK conversion plug, whereas the black ECAM22.110.B is sold directly by De'Longhi UK.
Applies to one variant
The ECAM22.110.B did not appear in Argos, Currys or John Lewis searches. In the UK it is sold by De'Longhi UK and via Amazon.co.uk, where it is listed as the #1 best seller in bean-to-cup machines.
No independent UK lab test of this model was found: Which? and Reddit could not be read, and TechRadar and Trusted Reviews only cover other Magnifica models.
Several Amazon UK reviewers found the printed instructions unhelpful and relied on YouTube or online tutorials. One spent hours on a warning light caused by a red plug under the drip tray, which another owner identifies as the steamer's condenser outlet.
Owners report the descaling prompt appearing often (from under 4 weeks to about every 3 months). One notes the machine stops working until it is descaled; the water-hardness setting can lengthen the interval.
Two owners found the pre-ground coffee option impractical: one says fine grounds stick inside and are hard to clean, and another lost coffee by adding it before switching on.
Customer extracts on the Amazon.co.uk page include machines failing within weeks or months (for example 'This lasted less than 8 weeks', 'after two weeks the milk frother broke'), alongside owners whose De'Longhi machines lasted 8–15 years. These extracts cover the whole multi-model listing and are not a failure rate.

UK owners mostly praise the coffee: they describe rich espresso with good crema and good cappuccino from the steam wand, and say the machine is easy to use day to day and good value for a bean-to-cup machine. Several say it is quieter than their previous De'Longhi. The most common complaint is set-up: the printed instructions are widely called unhelpful, and owners rely on YouTube tutorials and some trial and error with grind and beans. Others mention frequent descaling prompts, americanos that are not very hot, a pre-ground chute that is messy to clean, a late bean-empty warning, loud grinding and fewer features than pricier models. Extracts on Amazon report both machines failing within weeks and owners whose De'Longhis lasted many years, so long-term reliability remains unclear.

I don't normally write reviews but I really advise you to read this one, or waste six hours of your life trying to set the machine up, as we did. We got it working, eventually, but the control panel on this monster is a cacophony of chaotic irrationality and implausible illogicality … Indeed don't expect the instructions to be any help at all. … So be warned, flashing red light means remove red plastic plug. … Having said all that it makes really nice coffee, but you're going to need it, so be warned....

Having the ability to choose your own fresh coffee beans and grind them is a great advantage over pod style machines like tassimo, the taste is so much better and so you can get lovely expresso with a nice crema from this machine … What left me slightly disappointed though was the devices ability to make a cup of normal hot black Americano, I sort of expected to be able to hit a button and have a big cup of hot coffee but to me it just doesn't feel hot enough, the taste is fine but it lacks the heat. … Overall I'd still recommend it because I don't think any other devices at this price range are any better.

Hated this at first. Couldn't get the right blend of beans and everything tasted horrid and bitter. Instructions that come with it are useless but thankfully comes with QR codes linking to online tutorials. Eventually i found the right grind and blend combination. … After less than 4wks use it is indicating it needs descaling which I am surpised about as I live in a low scale area of the UK … Apart from a slow start I have grown to LOVE the coffee that this machine makes. It is loud when it grinds the beans but no louder than my own electric grinder. …

So happy with this purchase. Using it now for several months. It makes great coffee and is easy to operate. Doesnt take long to heat up and lots of options for strength and cup size. You do need to purchase descaler and the machine will stop working when the descaling is due (so far about every 3 months). … I used the ground coffee option a few times but found that the steam generated by the coffee making process caused the fine grinds to stick to the inside of the machine and can cause mould over time. … Worth watching a few of the youtube videos on the operation and cleaning as I didnt think the instructions were great. Would definitely recommend though

I am basing this review on a comparison with my previous machine, the Magnifica ESAM 4200.S Other reviewers have said this machine is noisy but it is so much quieter than its predecessor. … The 'little red plug' mentioned in one review as being absent from the instructions is, in fact, included and is the condenser outlet for the steamer. The manual just doesn't say that it is red!! … Yes, the descaling light does seem to come on quite frequently, but I live in a hard water area and use the machine several times a day so am happy with that. …

Excellent machine and easy to set up,run off a few brews before you start drinking just to ‘dial’ it in. I bought this to replace my 13 year old De’Longhi, which was having problems. This machine is a definite improvement, a lot quieter, the old one was a conversation stopper. I find that the ‘Run out of beans’ light doesn’t show until it’s completely empty,if there’s only a few beans it will still make a brew but a very weak one,so I’ve replaced the shaded bean cover with a some clear plastic, now I can see the level in the bean tray. …

Quite a ‘bean to cup’ machine that does the basics very well. Obviously it lacks a little compared to more expensive models.

The De'Longhi Magnifica S is an easy-to-use, reasonably priced bean-to-cup coffee machine that consistently produces great-tasting coffee. While it delivers excellent value and fits neatly in the kitchen, it can be quite noisy and lacks sensors to warn when coffee beans or water are running low. Overall, the reviewer highly recommends it as a reliable, high-quality investment.
YouTube · Review
The De'Longhi Magnifica S is an affordable and compact bean-to-cup coffee machine that produces classic espresso and black coffee, along with milk-based drinks via a manual steam wand. It provides extensive customisation, including 13 grinder settings and adjustable coffee strength and temperature. While programming advanced settings requires consulting the manual for tricky button combinations, it offers outstanding value for money.
YouTube · Review
The De'Longhi Magnifica S remains a benchmark entry-level bean-to-cup machine, delivering espresso quality on par with much more expensive models. While its plastic design and indicator lights look dated, the grinder is noisy, and the manual steam wand is less convenient for frequent milk drink lovers, it compensates with outstanding durability and unbeatable value. It is an ideal, cost-effective choice for black coffee enthusiasts and beginners wanting a reliable, easily maintained machine.
YouTube · Review
The De'Longhi Magnifica S is an affordable and compact bean-to-cup machine that produces great-tasting coffee. While it features a predominantly plastic build and requires some manual work like steaming milk and making true double shots, it offers excellent functionality and value for money.
