At a glance

The Philips Series 2200 EP2220/10 is an entry-level bean-to-cup machine. It grinds fresh beans with a 12-setting ceramic grinder and makes two one-touch drinks, espresso and coffee, plus hot water. Milk is frothed by hand with the Classic Milk Frother steam wand. Owners like the smooth, fresh coffee for the money, the simple touch controls and the easy cleaning thanks to the removable brew group and automatic rinse. The pre-ground coffee option and energy class A rating are pluses. Its limits are the narrow drink menu, a frother that takes practice, poor set-up instructions, mixed views on noise, and some reports of leaks, mess or early faults. It suits espresso, Americano and black-coffee drinkers happy to steam milk themselves. Anyone wanting one-touch lattes should look at LatteGo models. Long-term durability has not been independently tested.

Strengths

  • Fresh, smooth coffee that owners rate highly for the price, with adjustable strength and quantity.
  • Easy daily upkeep: removable brew group, dishwasher-safe parts, automatic rinse and AquaClean filter support.
  • Solid core hardware for the class: 15-bar pump, 12-setting ceramic grinder, 1.8 l tank, 275 g hopper, two servings at once and a pre-ground option.
Show all (5)
  • Energy class A with 0.2 W standby and auto-standby after 30 minutes.
  • Widely stocked by major UK retailers at about £280.

Things to consider

  • Only two coffee presets plus hot water and no user profiles; milk drinks need the manual steam wand.
  • Set-up instructions are widely criticised as unclear.
  • Some report mess, leaks, splashing and a flimsy splash cover; filters and cleaning tablets add running cost.
Show all (5)
  • Views on noise are split, and there are reports of breakdowns within months; long-term reliability is unproven.
  • Cup clearance tops out at 14.5 cm.
Who is it for, and who is it not for?

Good for

  • Espresso, Americano and black-coffee drinkers moving up from pods or instant who want fresh beans with minimal fuss.
  • Budget buyers happy to froth milk by hand for occasional cappuccinos, lattes or flat whites.
  • Households that also want hot water for tea or the option of pre-ground decaf.

May not suit

  • People who want one-touch milk drinks, user profiles or a wide drink menu.
  • Those who need very quiet early-morning operation.
  • Users of tall travel mugs over 14.5 cm.

Owners mostly buy this as an affordable first bean-to-cup machine or a step up from pods. They like the fresh, smooth coffee, adjustable strength, simple touch controls and easy daily cleaning thanks to the automatic rinse and removable parts. The pre-ground coffee option and hot-water button are valued. The manual steam frother makes good froth for cappuccinos, lattes and flat whites but takes some practice. The most common complaint is poor picture-only instructions and fiddly set-up, with many relying on YouTube. Views on noise are split. A minority report mess, leaks, flimsy parts, or that filters and cleaning tablets add effort and cost. Some store highlights mention breakdowns within months, so long-term reliability remains uncertain.

  1. N*** 4/5 11 August 2026 Argos

Easy to set up once I looked on YouTube as the instructions sent with it were not very clear, this is why I have given 4 instead of 5 stars. Since set up it is very simple to use and the coffee is excellent.

  2. G*** O*** B*** 5/5 27 June 2026 Argos

my old one broke so upgraded to this could do with more coffee features for its price as you only get expresso or coffee

  3. R*** 5/5 31 May 2026 Argos

This is a good coffee machine easy to setup and with the option of ground or beans, best of both worlds the frother is exceptional and makes the drink hot for Latte or cappuccinos

  4. S*** 5/5 19 April 2026 Argos

For the money I’m happy with this machine. At the end of the day you can pay a lot more for a bean to cup, so for that reason I didn’t expect the best coffee ever. That said it makes a decent cup once you get it dialled in. I only drink americanos, so this machine is good as it has the hot water option, so I add hw first, then an espresso shot, and it’s fine. You can dial in the water temp, brew strength and amount of water added. I just used YouTube videos.

  5. T*** 4/5 19 April 2026 Argos

My only small gripes are minor. If you just want hot water, it can splash slightly because the spout is quite high. Also, when you pull the tray out to empty the grounds, there is a square piece of plastic described as a splash cover. This also forms the front of the drawer, but instead of being attached, it simply slots in. I worry it could accidentally get broken, as the plastic doesn’t feel particularly strong.

  6. U*** 1/5 27 March 2026 Argos Syndicated from Philips UK site

Used a different brand (& have had 2 in the last 10 years). My coffee machine had broken so I needed a new one. This model was on offer (at a similar price to the brand I've been using) so I assumed it was a better machine. It is not. It's the messiest machine I've ever used. Coffee produced is fine but I feel I will be having to buy a replacement (of the brand I know & trust) before long. A complete waste of good money in my opinion.

  7. K*** 5/5 11 March 2026 Argos

Fab machine , does bean to cup and also ground coffee . Highly recommend

  8. G*** 5/5 27 April 2026 Argos

Bought a few weeks ago and it makes delicious coffee

  9. J*** i*** L*** 5/5 9 September 2026 Amazon 2 Coffee settings, Milk System Manual

The coffee tastes fresh and much better than using pods, and I like that you can adjust the strength to suit your preference. The ceramic grinder is fairly quiet compared with other bean-to-cup machines I’ve used, and it gives consistent results.

  10. W*** 5/5 28 August 2024 Amazon 2 Coffee settings, Milk System Manual

The bean storage is a good size, once filled it lasts a reasonable amount of time. You can adjust the fineness of the grind inside the bean storage as well, allowing for a finer or coarser grind in your drink. That said, given that it's inside the machine, it is more challenging to change this when full of coffee beans. There is a separate compartment (and measuring spoon) for using ground coffee, rather than beans. This is helpful when someone has a particular coffee preference.

  11. R*** H*** 4/5 11 August 2026 Amazon 2 Coffee settings, Milk System Manual

One year on and still going strong. The coffee is great but the machine can be little noisy.

  12. m*** w*** 1/5 7 April 2026 Amazon 2 Coffee settings, Milk System Manual

The filter lasted two months and had to be replaced. Couldn't get original ones as out of stock so bought Amazons Choice ones. It leaks everywhere. Pour water into the water chamber and it pours out of the back. It's absolutely hopeless. Called support and they said it was "meant to leak into the tray and it is normal". They blamed me for not getting the right filter but they recommend the ones I bought!!! Buy a jar of nescafe and save yourselves a lot of messing about and cleaning up. Absolute pile of junk

  13. L*** 5/5 8 February 2026 Amazon 2 Coffee settings, Milk System Manual

Very easy to set up, lots of videos on YouTube. Very easy to keep clean and maintain. Very easy to use. Heats up very quick! And making really good espresso!! How do you steam your milk and what type of coffee beans you buy is up to you!!

  14. A*** C*** 5/5 17 September 2022 Amazon 2 Coffee settings, Milk System Manual

I bought this a few months ago to replace an old pod machine, and wanted to be a little more environmentally friendly without sacrificing good coffee. Decided to go for this and glad I did, the whole family use this now. Switch it on as you walk into the kitchen and less than a minute it’s up to temperature, press button of your choice and a minute later you have a wonderful black coffee to add milk if you wish. …

Great coffee, so much smoother than pods, very easy to use,

  17. T*** 5/5 30 April 2025 philips.ae UK reviewer, verified buyer

I love my new machine and find it really useful that I can get a wonderfully balanced double espresso at the touch of a button and can select the flavour intensity with my own selection of beans just placed into the top. …

  18. R*** No rating 30 October 2024 philips.ae UK reviewer; collected as part of a promotion

The maintenance regime is a little demanding and the filter and cleaning tablets are an added expense but to get a great coffee at home is worth the money and effort.

  19. s*** No rating 22 October 2024 philips.ae UK reviewer; collected as part of a promotion

I have to be honest and say the instruction book is not great and it was a little tricky to set up, but nothing that a youtube video could help trouble shoot.

  20. a*** No rating 19 October 2024 philips.ae UK reviewer; collected as part of a promotion

Absolutely superb coffee machine, makes the best coffee, espresso & cappuccino outside of the world of pro baristas! Fresh from bea to cup (though you can use ground coffee too if you wish)

Philips 2200/1200/800/Carina Superautomatic Coffee Machine Review

The Philips 2200 is an entry-level bean-to-cup machine that shares its brew group with more expensive models in the range. While its standard espresso ratio leans towards a lungo and the pannarello wand creates airy froth, removing the outer sleeve allows you to produce silky microfoam for latte art. It is simple to operate and offers easy cleaning with a removable brew unit and dishwasher-safe drip tray.
