The Philips Series 2200 EP2220/10 is an entry-level bean-to-cup machine. It grinds fresh beans with a 12-setting ceramic grinder and makes two one-touch drinks, espresso and coffee, plus hot water. Milk is frothed by hand with the Classic Milk Frother steam wand. Owners like the smooth, fresh coffee for the money, the simple touch controls and the easy cleaning thanks to the removable brew group and automatic rinse. The pre-ground coffee option and energy class A rating are pluses. Its limits are the narrow drink menu, a frother that takes practice, poor set-up instructions, mixed views on noise, and some reports of leaks, mess or early faults. It suits espresso, Americano and black-coffee drinkers happy to steam milk themselves. Anyone wanting one-touch lattes should look at LatteGo models. Long-term durability has not been independently tested.
Strengths
Fresh, smooth coffee that owners rate highly for the price, with adjustable strength and quantity.
The EP2220/10 is currently sold new in the UK by AO, Argos, Currys, John Lewis and Amazon.co.uk under the same GTIN 8720389007408 and model code EP2220/10. Philips' own UK site currently has no live product page for it.
Philips lists only espresso, coffee and hot water, with 2 pre-programmed drinks and no user profiles. Milk drinks are made by hand with the Classic Milk Frother steam wand; there is no automatic milk system.
It has 1500 W, a 15-bar pump, a 1.8 l water tank, a 275 g bean container and a built-in ceramic grinder with 12 settings. It brews two servings at once, and retailers confirm a pre-ground coffee option.
The brew group is removable, there are dishwasher-safe parts, and automatic rinsing and guided descaling are built in. Philips claims the AquaClean filter allows up to 5000 cups without descaling if replaced when prompted (based on 8 filter replacements).
Strength and quantity have 3 settings each via My Coffee Choice, and AO lists 3 temperature settings. Philips copy on John Lewis says the brewing water is kept between 90 and 98 °C.
Most sampled owners on Argos, Amazon UK and Philips' site say the coffee is fresh-tasting, smoother than pods and good for the money. A few note it takes dialling in and is not top-tier.
The manual frother is generally liked for hot, creamy froth for cappuccinos, lattes and flat whites. Some say it takes practice, and one owner notes a metal jug is needed.
A minority report messiness, water leaks (in one case after switching to non-original filters), splashing from the high spout, and a flimsy slot-in splash cover on the grounds drawer.
Amazon UK shows a noticeable 1-star share, and its review excerpts report breakdowns or frother failures within 3–6 months. Other owners report a year of trouble-free use. No independent long-term reliability data was found.
Some owners note the maintenance routine and consumables (AquaClean filters, cleaning tablets) add effort and expense; one found a filter lasted only two months.

Owners mostly buy this as an affordable first bean-to-cup machine or a step up from pods. They like the fresh, smooth coffee, adjustable strength, simple touch controls and easy daily cleaning thanks to the automatic rinse and removable parts. The pre-ground coffee option and hot-water button are valued. The manual steam frother makes good froth for cappuccinos, lattes and flat whites but takes some practice. The most common complaint is poor picture-only instructions and fiddly set-up, with many relying on YouTube. Views on noise are split. A minority report mess, leaks, flimsy parts, or that filters and cleaning tablets add effort and cost. Some store highlights mention breakdowns within months, so long-term reliability remains uncertain.

Easy to set up once I looked on YouTube as the instructions sent with it were not very clear, this is why I have given 4 instead of 5 stars. Since set up it is very simple to use and the coffee is excellent.

my old one broke so upgraded to this could do with more coffee features for its price as you only get expresso or coffee

This is a good coffee machine easy to setup and with the option of ground or beans, best of both worlds the frother is exceptional and makes the drink hot for Latte or cappuccinos

For the money I’m happy with this machine. At the end of the day you can pay a lot more for a bean to cup, so for that reason I didn’t expect the best coffee ever. That said it makes a decent cup once you get it dialled in. I only drink americanos, so this machine is good as it has the hot water option, so I add hw first, then an espresso shot, and it’s fine. You can dial in the water temp, brew strength and amount of water added. I just used YouTube videos.

My only small gripes are minor. If you just want hot water, it can splash slightly because the spout is quite high. Also, when you pull the tray out to empty the grounds, there is a square piece of plastic described as a splash cover. This also forms the front of the drawer, but instead of being attached, it simply slots in. I worry it could accidentally get broken, as the plastic doesn’t feel particularly strong.

Used a different brand (& have had 2 in the last 10 years). My coffee machine had broken so I needed a new one. This model was on offer (at a similar price to the brand I've been using) so I assumed it was a better machine. It is not. It's the messiest machine I've ever used. Coffee produced is fine but I feel I will be having to buy a replacement (of the brand I know & trust) before long. A complete waste of good money in my opinion.

The coffee tastes fresh and much better than using pods, and I like that you can adjust the strength to suit your preference. The ceramic grinder is fairly quiet compared with other bean-to-cup machines I’ve used, and it gives consistent results.

The bean storage is a good size, once filled it lasts a reasonable amount of time. You can adjust the fineness of the grind inside the bean storage as well, allowing for a finer or coarser grind in your drink. That said, given that it's inside the machine, it is more challenging to change this when full of coffee beans. There is a separate compartment (and measuring spoon) for using ground coffee, rather than beans. This is helpful when someone has a particular coffee preference.

One year on and still going strong. The coffee is great but the machine can be little noisy.

The filter lasted two months and had to be replaced. Couldn't get original ones as out of stock so bought Amazons Choice ones. It leaks everywhere. Pour water into the water chamber and it pours out of the back. It's absolutely hopeless. Called support and they said it was "meant to leak into the tray and it is normal". They blamed me for not getting the right filter but they recommend the ones I bought!!! Buy a jar of nescafe and save yourselves a lot of messing about and cleaning up. Absolute pile of junk

I bought this a few months ago to replace an old pod machine, and wanted to be a little more environmentally friendly without sacrificing good coffee. Decided to go for this and glad I did, the whole family use this now. Switch it on as you walk into the kitchen and less than a minute it’s up to temperature, press button of your choice and a minute later you have a wonderful black coffee to add milk if you wish. …

I love my new machine and find it really useful that I can get a wonderfully balanced double espresso at the touch of a button and can select the flavour intensity with my own selection of beans just placed into the top. …

The maintenance regime is a little demanding and the filter and cleaning tablets are an added expense but to get a great coffee at home is worth the money and effort.

I have to be honest and say the instruction book is not great and it was a little tricky to set up, but nothing that a youtube video could help trouble shoot.

Absolutely superb coffee machine, makes the best coffee, espresso & cappuccino outside of the world of pro baristas! Fresh from bea to cup (though you can use ground coffee too if you wish)

Philips EP2220/10 Test & Review – Is It Worth Buying in 2026?
The Philips 2200 Series EP2220/10 is a bean-to-cup coffee machine that brews fresh espresso, black coffee, and milk-based drinks at the touch of a button. It features an intuitive touch display, a durable ceramic grinder, and a classic milk frother. Maintenance is minimised thanks to a removable brew group and an AquaClean filter that allows brewing up to 5,000 cups without descaling.
The Philips Saeco 2200 is a compact, budget-friendly automatic espresso machine featuring a sleek black finish with chrome trim. It offers customizable coffee dose and volume settings, a 12-setting grinder, and a Pannarello steam wand for easy milk frothing. While the AquaClean filter must be purchased separately, the machine delivers hot, flavourful coffee with minimal fuss.
Philips 2200 Super Automatic Espresso Machine - ALMOST Perfect
The Philips 2200 is a super-automatic espresso machine designed for speed and convenience, producing decent coffee at the touch of a button. Although it features an all-plastic exterior and cannot match the extraction quality of a tuned semi-automatic setup, it is very user-friendly and great value, especially when discounted.
The Philips 2200 is an entry-level bean-to-cup machine that shares its brew group with more expensive models in the range. While its standard espresso ratio leans towards a lungo and the pannarello wand creates airy froth, removing the outer sleeve allows you to produce silky microfoam for latte art. It is simple to operate and offers easy cleaning with a removable brew unit and dishwasher-safe drip tray.
