The Philips 5400 Series LatteGo (EP5446/70) is a bean-to-cup machine that makes 12 drinks at the touch of a button. Its LatteGo milk jug has no tubes, and it saves four user profiles plus a guest. Owners mainly praise how easy it is to use and clean and how well it suits households with different coffee preferences. The coffee is generally rated good once the grinder is dialled in, but the first cups are often weak, and a minority never get strong or hot enough drinks. Expect a drip tray that fills quickly because of rinse cycles, audible grinding, and froth that some find too airy, with no way to reduce it. Enthusiasts after café-strength espresso may be disappointed. No independent reliability data was available, so long-term durability is uncertain. The high-street price is the RRP, and buyers often recommend waiting for a discount.

What the features mean in everyday use.
The EP5446/70 is a 1500 W, 15 bar bean-to-cup machine with 12 pre-programmed drinks, a 275 g bean hopper, a 1.8 L water tank and a 0.26 L LatteGo milk container. It can make two cups at once.
The machine saves 4 user profiles plus a guest profile and has a 12-step ceramic grinder and a TFT display. It has no app or connectivity.
Philips says the ceramic grinders last at least 20,000 cups. It also says the AquaClean filter avoids descaling for up to 5,000 cups, based on 8 filter replacements, and that Aroma Extract keeps brewing water at 90-98°C.
The LatteGo milk system has two parts and no tubes. Its parts and the drip tray are dishwasher-safe, and the brew group is fully removable for rinsing.
Philips gives the dimensions as 433 mm long, 246 mm wide and 372 mm high, and the weight as 8 kg. Argos lists a maximum cup height of 14.5 cm under the adjustable spout.
Philips and the UK retailers list a 2-year manufacturer's guarantee.
The most common praise from UK buyers at all four stores is that the machine is easy to set up and use day to day.
Many reviewers find cleaning easy. They mention the tube-free LatteGo jug, which rinses in seconds and can go into the fridge with milk in it, and the self-rinse cycle.
Buyers value the saved user profiles and the ability to adjust strength, volume and milk for each person. Households with several coffee drinkers often mention this.
Most reviewers rate the coffee as good to excellent once the grinder and strength settings are dialled in.
Several buyers say the first cups were weak or watery. The machine needed a run-in period and grinder adjustment. A minority never got past watery coffee, and some reported no solid pucks or 'watery sludge'.
A recurring complaint is that the drip tray fills quickly and the water tank empties fast. Buyers blame the rinse cycles at power-on and power-off and the waste water they produce.
Some reviewers find grinding and brewing noisy. Others call the noise normal for a bean-to-cup machine.
A minority find the LatteGo froth too airy or thick and say it cannot be reduced. Some also say drinks are not hot enough. Reddit users report the same airy froth.
Some owners say the LatteGo jug feels flimsy. A few report faults: a frother that leaked or deformed, machines returned within weeks, beans not feeding into the grinder, and mould behind the water tank after six months. Most of these reports are in the John Lewis feed, about half of which is syndicated from philips.com. These reports are individual cases, not a measured failure rate.
Several reviewers advise not to pay full price because the machine is often discounted. A few buyers who paid full price felt it was poor value for the drink size or strength.
Argos, John Lewis, Currys and Philips UK listed the machine at the same price on the check date. A marketplace seller on Amazon.co.uk was cheaper. This suggests the high-street price is the RRP, and discounts come mainly through marketplace sellers and promotions.
Which? has tested the EP5446/70. It lists a June 2021 release, a first review in April 2022 and a last check in March 2024, but the score, Best Buy status and reliability data are behind its paywall.
On Reddit's r/espresso, some users say the coffee is 'a bit lacking' compared with what enthusiasts expect. One commenter says the Philips machines use only an 11 g dose and cannot grind very finely.
Applies to the model family
Currys lists support for both whole beans and ground coffee. One John Lewis reviewer uses the ground-coffee option for decaf. Another reports that pre-ground coffee went straight into the waste tray.

UK buyers mostly describe the EP5446/70 as an easy, convenient bean-to-cup machine. They like the tube-free LatteGo jug that rinses in seconds, saved profiles for each household member, and good coffee once the grinder is dialled in. The commonest caveat is that the first cups taste weak or watery until the machine settles in and the grind is adjusted. A minority never got strong enough coffee. Other recurring complaints are a drip tray that fills quickly because of rinse cycles, grinder noise, airy froth that cannot be reduced, drinks not hot enough for some, and a jug that feels flimsy. A few owners report faults or mould behind the water tank, which they say calls for regular deep cleaning. Several reviewers advise waiting for a discount.

Amazing machine and I use it daily!! Took a few attempts to get the coffee exactly how I want it but now it saves my settings so in a few presses of a button I have perfect cup.Easy to tweak the settings from the bean grind strength to the amount of froth. Easy to clean by pulling out the drip tray that also holds the used ground beans and can also be put in the dishwasher. …

Unfortunately, I’m really unhappy with my purchase. The coffee is far too watery and weak for my taste, and the amount of coffee produced for drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes is much too small. I expected a much better coffee experience from a machine at this price.

Makes a great cappuccino, but could be better if volume was increased as only get half a mug.we do have it set on maximum! Flat white we gave up on as whatever settings we set the coffee tasted “burnt”.

I bought this last month. It makes good coffee but it seems to use more water than I would have thought. After making 2 mugs of coffee the drip tray holds rather a lot of water, I would say nearly as much as a mug of of coffee

I bought this coffee machine about a couple of weeks ago and I’m not disappointed the self rinsing is really impressive along with the storage menus and a great range of drinks, I also own a Bosch Tassimo machine but the Philips puts it in the shade, I’m more than happy with my purchase.

I wanted a bean to cup machine and after research, picked this one and I'm very happy with it. The reviews on the Argos website were really helpful. The Phillips website has great videos on how to use and clean the machine. The one huge downside is that it doesn't include a menu showing exactly what goes into each coffee recipe. …

We are now on our 3rd 5400, the previous returned for faults after a week. The last two don't fill the grinder with beans correctly, so I get weak coffee and watery sludge in the grounds container, rather than disks.

Very impressed with the coffee made on the machine in the store where it was demonstrated. So, we bought one. Having unboxed it and been through the set up routine at home we were very disappointed. Worked our way through nearly a whole bag of fresh beans, trying lots of different grind values and all the machine produces is watery coffee. …

Now for the bad news. After six months of use, I decided to do a deep clean and opened the hatch behind the water container. To my absolute horror, I discovered a lovely little colony of mould growing at the bottom. I might have missed a step in the cleaning manual, but it’s a vital design quirk to keep in mind. It’s easy enough to wipe away, but routine deep cleaning is non-negotiable.

One thing I’d mention to new owners is that, like several other reviewers have noted, the first few cups were not particularly impressive. The machine needs a little time to settle in, and the grinder seems to improve after some use. I’d recommend using a less expensive coffee bean initially while you run a number of coffees through the machine and adjust the settings to your taste.

The LatteGo milk system is a big plus. It makes smooth, hot milk with a nice foam, and there are no pipes to clean. The milk container comes apart in seconds and you can rinse it under the tap.

There are a few things I don't particularly like. The 'latte-go' milk holder feels somewhat cheap, and I fear a fall onto a hard floor could end it's life quite quickly. There's also a piece of plastic that slots into the drip tray and acts as the machine's front fascia, which scratches easily. The machine rinses itself when turned on and off, which can lead to stale coffee water contaminating your clean cup if you forget about it. …

The Philips 5400 offers an intuitive interface, straightforward volume adjustments in millilitres, and a convenient milk carafe that allows top-ups while frothing. However, its build quality feels somewhat flimsy and clumsy in places, and the coffee it extracts lacks the intensity of traditional espresso. Overall, it may suit those moving from pod machines who prefer milder coffee, but espresso purists might be disappointed.
YouTube · Long-term experience
After five months of use and nearly a thousand drinks made, the reviewer gives a positive assessment of the Philips LatteGo 5400. They praise its ease of use, drink variety, and low maintenance, while highlighting minor drawbacks like the recurring cost of water filters and micro-cracking on the milk frother container.
