The Gaggia Brera is a compact bean-to-cup espresso machine with a ceramic grinder, one-touch espresso and lungo buttons and a manual Pannarello steam wand. Owners mostly praise the coffee, simple controls, small footprint and removable brew group. Common drawbacks are the small 1.2 litre tank, frequent tray and bin emptying, limited drink options with a weak lungo, a noisy grinder and a partly plastic build. Some owners report leaks or breakdowns while others report many years of use, so long-term durability evidence is mixed. Philips UK lists it as discontinued, and it is sold mainly via Amazon marketplace and coffee specialists, so check the plug, colour code and warranty before buying. It suits espresso drinkers with limited space, not those wanting one-touch milk drinks or large mugs.

What the features mean in everyday use.
Philips UK lists the Gaggia Brera (RI9833/70) as Discontinued and out of stock. In the UK the machine is still sold by Amazon.co.uk marketplace seller Caffe Shop Ltd and by specialists such as Caffè Italia and Mr Bean2Cup.
Argos and John Lewis do not stock the Brera: Argos search returns no results, and John Lewis states that it does not stock the Gaggia Brera.
The machine is compact: 25.6 cm wide, 31.5 cm high and 44.7 cm deep, weighing 8.5 kg, with water tank and grounds container removable from the front.
Owners repeatedly find the 1.2 l water tank small, saying it needs refilling after about two to three mugs, partly because the machine uses water for self-rinsing.
The most common praise is for coffee quality: rich espresso with crema, which several owners compare favourably with high-street coffee shops or their previous machines.
Owners describe the machine as easy to operate with one-touch espresso and lungo buttons. The brew group can be removed and rinsed under the tap.
The manual Pannarello steam wand is generally praised for frothing milk quickly. One owner found it mounted high, and another found its movement limited for larger jugs.
A minority of owners report faults: internal leaks, short-circuiting, repeated breakdowns and warning-light lock-ups, some within the first few years. Others report a previous Brera lasting 15 years. Store reviews cannot establish a failure rate.
Customisation is limited to two drink sizes (espresso, lungo), three strength levels and five grind settings. Some owners find the lungo weak and brew a double espresso instead.
The grinder is audibly loud while grinding. One owner said it wakes others in the house, while another found the machine surprisingly quiet.
The body is plastic on the sides and top with metal front panels. Expert Reviews found the main control knob cheap-feeling, and an Amazon owner called it 'built to a price'.
Expert Reviews' 2013 test measured espresso at 64 °C. It found the machine flushes on start-up, so a waste mug is needed, and that there is little room under the spout for large cups. Its verdict was 'a good buy' for convenience but short of the best manual machines for espresso.
Owners mention frequent drip tray and grounds bin emptying, regular manual descaling and some daily cleaning. One finds ground coffee inside the machine awkward to clean.
Several UK buyers received machines with a European plug, needing an adapter or replacement lead. Buyers should check the plug and the UK warranty arrangement before purchase.
Gaggia claims a durable ceramic grinder adjustable from coarse to fine, a ground-coffee compartment for a different blend, and programmable dispensing buttons.
In the UK the Brera is sold under RI9305/11, RI9305/01 and RI9833/70. Core specs (1400 W, 15 bar, 1.2 l, 250 g, 8 pucks) are identical across these codes, which differ by colour or finish.

Which? currently lists only the Gaggia Magenta Milk and Magenta Plus in its Gaggia tests. No current Which? result for the Brera is available.
Some owners report long service: a replacement after a previous Brera lasted 15 years, and one machine still making superb coffee after over a year of constant use.

Owners mostly like the Brera for its coffee: rich espresso with crema from fresh beans, made with a single button, plus a steam wand that froths milk quickly. Many also value its compact footprint and simple controls. The most frequent complaint is the small water tank, along with a drip tray and grounds bin that need frequent emptying. Owners who want longer drinks find the options limited (espresso or lungo only, five grind settings) and the lungo weak. Other negatives are a noisy grinder, a plastic build that feels 'built to a price', manual descaling and some daily cleaning. A minority describe leaks or breakdowns within a few years, while others report many years of service. Several UK buyers received machines with a European plug.

Absolutely love this coffee machine I bought as birthday gift to self So glad I did makes coffee bean to cup how I like it perfect could not be happier

Easy to use, one button, and makes great hot coffees. It’s all automatic from beans to cup, and quicker than the kettle. It will make about 3 mugs before you need to refill the water. The drink size is programmable. … It makes a grinding noise preparing the beans. The rest of the time it is silent, except when it briefly cleans itself, to switch to standby. The outside is brushed stainless steel, plastic inside.

I had a Gaggia Syncrony … had it about 25 years. It finally gave up and I bought this machine. Irritating is an understatement. The coffee is not as good or as strong as my old machine, there is no crème. … Its SO complicated! … At the moment it will only produce a small amount of coffee before demanding the clean programme... it then pushes out more water than it does for a cup of coffee. Then all four red warning lights come on and there is nothing in the guide about what to do if all four warning lights come on! Seriously considering throwing it away.
M*** C*** 3/5 23 August 2018 Amazon Style Name: Brera Silver
On this machine you have two sizes - espresso and lungo, which is about half a mug and which is watery and weak no matter how you set the machine. … Secondly, the build quality is okay but not by any means high end. Definitely built to a price and that price is the lower end of the market. … So, the bottom line is that this machine looks good, makes decent coffee but is inflexible to use and feels a bit low rent.
S*** B*** 5/5 21 August 2013 Amazon Style Name: Brera Silver
If you take the time to read the manual properly, it's easy to set up and makes fabulous coffee really quickly. You have to spend some time tweaking the various options (grind, strength, short/long, single/double shot) to get it just how you want it, but really the quality of the coffee is amazing! … It's not without it's quirks - the warning level for a full grounds bin is very inconsistent and it has given me a cup of hot water and thrown the ground coffee all over the place once - but I can forgive it when the coffee tastes this good. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The coffee is good BUT... - the machine came with a EU plug - the machine needs cleaning every day - the machine leaks if the drip tray is even just 1mm off - make sure it's fully pushed in Overall the experience with this machine is really not what I expected. … Now I need to clean the inside of the machine and the brew unit daily.

The steam wand is nicely situated and you can get a milk pitcher underneath it with ease. This machine steams milk to a high temperature very quickly and produces thick creamy milk - perfect for cappuccinos or lattes.

The machine is easy to operate, you can make a "long" or a "short" coffee that is "weak", "medium" or "strong", it rinses itself when you take it off or put it on standby, it has a wand to quickly heat milk, highly recommended affordable luxury…

I bought Gaggia because I thought the name meant quality. After less than 3 years, this machine developed a leak inside and shorted out. It will cost roughly half the price of a new machine to get it mended. Very disappointing. My previous machine, not Gaggia, lasted for 12 years!

Returned machine ( to Amamazon, who were extremely helpful) after it broke down twice in 6months and the 2nd time the repair company wanted £50 carriage for it to be repaired under warranty.Very disappointed after having Gaggia coffee makers for over 25 years.

Awesome coffee machine. Perfect coffee every time, regardless of bean or grind. Easy to use, easy to set up and the presets are a great touch. Makes coffee as good if not better than the high street chains. Get one.

In theory a good machine, but 2 off them and they just didnt last. Very disappointing. Also disappointed by the small reservoir 1.5 cups and its empty. Needs the grounds tray emptied after only a few cups. Requires descaling (costly chemical) very frequently and there is no avoiding it.

No complaints working as expected, quality (of drink) every bit as good as my gaggia classic, one little niggle reservoir on the small side but ease of filling compensates.

We’ve had this machine about 6months or so and whilst the coffee it brews is great – rich, good crema, smooth and we enjoy the various options it brings, it also appears poorly constructed. It’s broken down several times – fortunately my son has been able to fix it each time. It makes a real racket sometimes as it’s brewing – grinding and whirring at high pitch levels…

Very happy with my new gaggia, it’s not just as big as my previous one and needs refilling more frequently because of that. It also the uses water to self clean itself, which is a great extra to have so I’d prefer a bigger water tank or direct water source to the tank without needing to refill, but they’re only small complaints and it’s such a great machine.
G*** 5/5 8 June 2021 coffeeitalia.co.uk RI9305/11 Black
…I prepared my first espresso using the factory default settings – I was very surprised by how quiet the machine is, and how much flavour it extracted. I’m very impressed. Way better than my old DeLonghi Magnifica. It is beautifully made of very high quality materials, and feels very solid. … And contrary to numerous online reports, the coffee actually comes out perfectly hot – definitely hotter than from my DeLonghi Magnifica, at highest temperature setting.
B*** 4/5 15 March 2021 coffeeitalia.co.uk RI9305/11 Black
I bought this in order to stop using plastic coffee pods. It’s great with beans, bit fiddly to get the hang of using ground coffee (when in the startup cycle to add the coffee) and cleaning it is a bit of a faff – but overall, it does exactly what I bought it for.

This is the second Gaggia Brera I’ve had….the first one lasted 15 years! I love this little machine. So clean and easy to use, makes great coffee every time, I wouldn’t be without it, nor would I even look at another brand or model. I highly recommend this machine.
C*** 5/5 20 June 2020 coffeeitalia.co.uk RI9305/11 Black
…Makes a good coffee with a range of variability. Runs cleanly with very little mess. The only downside is the size of the water tank so I can only make two big cups and a litre of hot milk per fill.
O*** 4/5 23 September 2018 coffeeitalia.co.uk RI9305/11 Black
…The only niggle I have is the frothier is set quite high so you need to hold the cup up to it to reach the milk and the water reservoir is smaller but I suppose this is to do with keeping the size of the overall machine down to a compact size.
M*** 4/5 12 June 2018 coffeeitalia.co.uk RI9305/11 Black
…The manual suggests that it will take 5 coffee’s for the machine to adapt to the coffee and grind setting, and I would say this is spot on. Shots 1 and 2 a little weak, No3 passable and number 4 was just about perfect. Milk frothing / heating had been a worry but not so. Frothed milk easily and that was using skimmed milk. Overall very pleased with the Brera.

What it has
Technical information with its source.
Where the information comes from, by type; each finding also links its own source.
This page is compiled from manufacturer, store, review and video sources; every piece of information links to the source it was read from. Technical values are as stated by the manufacturer or store; user experiences are summarised from the reviews read and do not apply to every unit. We do not test products ourselves.
