The De'Longhi Magnifica S Smart (ECAM250.33.TB) is a compact, entry-level bean-to-cup machine. It makes one-touch espresso and long coffee, and has a manual steam wand for milk. Despite the name, there is no app or Wi-Fi. Owners mostly rate the coffee highly and find it easy to use and clean, and many see it as good value when discounted. Expect a learning curve to dial in grind and strength, and a diagram-only manual. The pre-ground coffee option has a poor reputation. Other drawbacks: frequent water-using rinse cycles, an auto-off that cannot be adjusted, and two-cup brewing for espresso only. It suits espresso and black-coffee drinkers who don't mind frothing milk by hand. Anyone who wants one-touch milk drinks should look at pricier models. It is a 2020 design with limited UK stock, and no independent long-term reliability data could be checked.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
15-bar pump, 1450 W, 1.8 l removable water tank and 250 g bean hopper, with Thermoblock heating.
Integrated conical steel grinder with 13 settings; the machine also accepts pre-ground coffee via a separate function.
One-touch espresso, double espresso, coffee and long coffee plus hot water. Milk is frothed manually with a steam wand; there is no automatic milk carafe or one-touch cappuccino.
Automatic rinsing, cleaning and descaling programmes, auto shut-off, dishwasher-safe drip tray grid, and a water filter and descaler supplied in the box.
Compact footprint for a bean-to-cup machine: 240 mm wide, 440 mm deep and 360 mm high, weighing about 9.2-9.3 kg.
De'Longhi claims the conical steel grinders are 'calibrated with 100% accuracy', that the machine grinds the exact amount leaving no residual coffee, and that the Thermoblock heats only the water needed for each drink.
Coffee taste is the most frequently praised point in UK store reviews; buyers describe good espresso and americano-style coffee, often comparing it favourably with pod machines.
Many reviewers find the machine simple to use day to day once set up, with straightforward one-touch operation.
Reviewers appreciate the self-rinsing and say the machine is easy to keep clean.
Several buyers consider it good value, especially when bought on offer; one notes it is less good value at full price.
A recurring complaint is that getting good coffee takes experimentation with beans, grind level, strength and water volume; some buyers relied on YouTube videos.
Buyers criticise the diagram-only manual, particularly for descaling and water-hardness set-up.
Several reviewers report that the pre-ground coffee option works poorly (weak coffee, grounds spilling inside, error messages or a sticking part).
Some owners dislike the water used by the automatic rinse at every start-up and shut-down, and that the auto-off is not adjustable and switches off sooner than older De'Longhi machines (one reviewer cites 30 minutes).
Only espresso can be brewed as two cups at once; long coffees have to be made one after another, which some reviewers find inconvenient.
A few reviewers describe grinding and brewing as loud.
A small number of reviews mention faults: a grinder jamming twice, a unit failing after six days, repeated descale warnings, and a sticking pre-ground mechanism. These are individual reports, not a failure rate.
Expert Reviews recommended it as a good bean-to-cup machine under £500, praising its looks, build and espresso. Its criticisms were that the default settings need tweaking (the first espressos were watery and bitter) and that long coffees can taste bitter. The steam wand gave hot, frothy milk rather than silky microfoam.
UK forum owners of Magnifica S machines (exact variant unclear) report around three to five years of use before failure; one cites repeated repairs for a broken plastic lever arm, while another reports no issues after nearly three years.
Applies to the model family
At the time of checking, Currys was the only UK retailer found selling it new. Amazon.co.uk listings were unavailable, John Lewis no longer lists it, Argos does not stock it, and the De'Longhi store page showed it out of stock.
The 'Smart' in the name does not mean app or Wi-Fi control: Which? lists smart control as 'No' and Expert Reviews notes it is not Wi-Fi connected.
Which? records the model as released in September 2020, so it is an older design in De'Longhi's range.
Pre-owned or refurbished units are listed in the UK, including certified refurbished stock from De'Longhi's eBay outlet.
Inferred from the specs and reviews: best suited to people who mainly drink espresso or black coffee and are happy to froth milk by hand and spend some time dialling in; less suited to those wanting one-touch milk drinks, app control, or brewing two long coffees at once.

UK buyers mostly praise the coffee itself: good espresso and americano-style drinks from a compact, smart-looking machine that is simple to use and keep clean once it is set up. Many see it as a step up from pod machines and good value, especially on offer. The main frustrations are the effort needed to dial in beans, grind and strength, and a manual that relies on diagrams. Owners also say the pre-ground coffee option is unreliable. Other complaints: the frequent automatic rinses waste water, the auto-off cannot be adjusted, and only espresso can be made two cups at a time. A few find it noisy, and a handful report faults such as a jammed grinder or an early failure.

Good product . Quite large and noisy compared to what I had previously but it produces a good brew quickly .

The coffee machine was purchased as a srep up from a pod machine and certainly meets that brief. However, we didn’t realise just how difficult it would be to find the right coffee beans, grind settings, strength settings, water volume, temperature settings etc etc …

The coffee machine works nice, right for people who don’t mind about any milky coffee. Only the one disadvantage is the small size of the portions.

It takes a while to get used to how it works but doesn’t like to make coffee using the pre ground option. Wish I chose a different model.

Great coffee machine. I used to have the old one and it lasted well over 10 years. So no doubt this one will last long time. It makes a great coffee too and very easy to maintain. And for the price it is I couldn’t recommend enough.

great coffee machine BUT the really annoying automated water clearing every time it shuts down or starts. its time consuming and really annoying especially when your in a rush. Also its automatic shut down is not adjustable on time so it shuts down in my opinion too quickly. …

I bought the Magnifica S smart coffee machine after looking at several models online and offline. I particularly wanted a machine suitable for both beans and coffee grounds. The coffee grounds were coming down straight and the coffee was very weak. I looked at reviews and information online and followed the correct steps. I had to return it.

Good machine for the price. Easy to set up. Coffee good, once a few adjustments have been made, following video instructions.
