At a glance

The Sage Barista Pro is a manual espresso machine with a built-in 30-setting conical burr grinder, ThermoJet heating that is ready in seconds, PID temperature control and a manual steam wand. Owners praise the espresso and milk quality, the very fast heat-up and the compact, solid build, and many upgraders rate it clearly above the Barista Express. It is hands-on: grind, dose and shot time must be dialled in, factory grind settings often need adjusting, and the built-in grinder draws the most complaints about consistency. A minority report failures (steam wand, solenoid, display, grinder) and costly out-of-warranty repairs; no independent long-term reliability data is available. It suits people who want to learn café-style espresso at home and value speed; it is a poor fit for anyone wanting push-button convenience.

Strengths

  • Ready to brew and steam within seconds thanks to ThermoJet heating, which owners confirm in practice
  • Widely praised espresso and milk drinks, with a capable 4-hole steam wand
  • All-in-one setup: integrated 30-setting burr grinder, PID control, LCD with volumetric 1 & 2 cup shots, and a full accessory kit
Show all (4)
  • Compact, attractive and solidly built, in several colour options

Things to consider

  • Steep learning curve; default grind settings are often off and need adjusting, sometimes at the inner burr
  • The built-in grinder is the most criticised part, for inconsistent or clogging grinding
  • Some owners report component failures and expensive repairs after the 2-year warranty
Show all (5)
  • Minor usability gripes: narrow tank lid, no low-water stop, fixed-time hot water
  • Some stock may lack the dosing funnel or the Baratza burrs that Sage now lists; check the box contents
Who is it for, and who is it not for?

Good for

  • Home baristas who want to learn grinding, tamping and milk texturing and value fast warm-up
  • Barista Express owners looking for a faster, quieter upgrade

May not suit

  • Anyone wanting push-button automatic coffee without dialling in
  • Enthusiasts who want maximum grind precision without adding a separate grinder

Reliability

Some reviews and forum posts report failures: a steam wand or steam dial fault, a solenoid valve, an LCD, a grinder after weeks, a cracked ThermoJet elbow leaking, and a steaming pump fault. Some owners were quoted costly repairs outside the 2-year warranty. These reports are anecdotal and do not establish a failure rate.

Expert review

Trusted Reviews (2020) called it a stellar manual machine with a great steam wand and super-fast heat-up. Its cons were that it is un-intuitive for novice baristas, prone to splashing into espresso cups, and has a rear tank that is awkward to refill in small kitchens.

UK pricing

At the October 2026 check, Sage UK, Amazon.co.uk and Currys sold it for about £600, while John Lewis charged £729. Sage's list price is £729.95, so £600 looks like a discount on the list price.

Inference from the sources · See source

Spec revision

Sage's current UK page lists a dosing funnel and Baratza burrs. Currys' box contents omit the dosing funnel, and an Amazon reviewer said their unit came without the funnel or Baratza burrs. Some stock may therefore be an earlier specification.

UK buyers mostly love the espresso and milk drinks the Barista Pro makes, and many say the results rival a coffee shop. The near-instant heat-up, quick steaming and compact, well-built design are the most praised points, especially by owners upgrading from a Barista Express. The common caveat is that this is a hands-on machine: expect to spend time, and some beans, dialling in grind size, dose and shot time. Several owners found the factory grind settings off and had to adjust the inner burr. The main criticisms are an inconsistent or clogging built-in grinder and a minority of failures (steam wand or dial, solenoid, display, grinder), sometimes just after the 2-year warranty, with repair costs owners felt were high. A few find it too complicated for push-button use.

  1. B*** 5/5 26 August 2026 Amazon Black Truffle

Great machine for those prepared to invest just a little time to learning how to get the best results from its capabilities. The current BARISTA PRO is the best *** machine in the Sage stable, in my experience. Produces a superior hot , tasty coffee, slickly and quickly and economically. Compared with my previous Sage Barista Express Impress, it is streets ahead in every way. Love it!

  2. D*** E*** F*** 5/5 22 August 2026 Amazon Black Truffle

This is chalk and cheese compared to the Tassimo pod machine we used to have before going on a barista course. It looks the part and is easy enough to use. The default grind size & duration and (expressing) water temperature are way out though. … Nevertheless, I’m getting closer to a great coffee with every tweak and have just about cracked milk frothing too. Would I change it if I had the opportunity? Absolutely not. I’m having way too much fun.

  3. N*** 5/5 21 May 2026 Amazon Black Truffle

I purchased this to replace a similar De'Longhi coffee machine (the Specialista Prestigio), which failed after only 3 years of use. I have now been using the Sage machine for 6 months and it is, in my opinion, by far the better designed machine. … In particular, the performance of the milk wand is far superior to that of the De'Longhi machine and is quick and consistent to use. …

  4. m*** 5/5 24 January 2026 Amazon Brushed Stainless Steel

This is a great coffee machine once you’ve taken the time to set it up correctly for your beans. The build quality is excellent, with a solid stainless steel finish that feels premium and well made. It does take some time to “dial in” the settings. On the default grind setting, the coffee came out far too fine. Even increasing the grind size to the maximum didn’t fully solve the issue, so we had to adjust the burr grinder. …

  5. D*** W*** 5/5 30 May 2025 Amazon Brushed Stainless Steel

This is an upgrade on my Sage Barista Express (also an excellent machine) and I’m already enjoying the significantly faster times to heat up, create steam, foam milk, and be ready for the next cup. … Reading some of the other reviews, I think it’s important to point out that this is NOT a bean-to-cup machine. It’s primarily a manual operation and you need to understand or want to learn the fundamentals of grind, dose, tamp, and extraction to get good results.

  6. J*** C*** 4/5 17 January 2023 Amazon Brushed Stainless Steel

The Thermojet internals heat up in seconds - much quicker from button press to being able to make espresso than with the Express. … The steam wand - It looks similar but it has 4 holes vs 1 on the express. Doesn’t sound like much but I'm steaming faster and the foam is much better than I ever achieved on the Express … The grinder is the only thing I'm left thinking I might need to improve upon in the future on an otherwise excellent machine.

  7. M*** A*** A*** 1/5 11 May 2022 Amazon Brushed Stainless Steel

The machine is great, a few fiddley parts to keep clean and the bean to coffee filter always grinds too much coffee so makes a mess and wastes coffee. What is most disappointing is the machine was advertised and came with information about claiming a free barista pack worth £150.00. … Very poor customer service.

  8. A*** 1/5 6 September 2026 John Lewis

Wouldn't reccommend this machiene. Bought it as an upgrade from my Barista Express & I am going to go back to my old Barista express instead. On the pro: The grinder clogged up as i was dialing it in and was not accessible to clean. The coffee did not run through well & the design is poor. Doesn't run through enough water either. …

  9. A*** 4/5 26 July 2026 John Lewis

As a novice to the coffee barista world the set up was easy and the coffee was great from the start. The machine is a good size and looks great.

  10. N*** 2/5 22 April 2026 John Lewis Syndicated review

Had the machine about a month and at first I was happy but unfortunately things have changed. I cannot get consistent results. … very tempted to go back to my old Gaggia classic, simple to use and great coffee.

  11. M*** 4/5 20 April 2026 John Lewis Syndicated review

This is a great coffee machine, brews very nice coffee once your have dialled it in. The steamer is very good with 4 holes for quicker steaming and the time to warm up is insane, about 3 seconds before its ready to brew coffee. …

  12. S*** 2/5 31 March 2026 John Lewis Syndicated review

When it works, it produces very good espresso with consistent temperature and solid steam performance. … The machine occasionally stops the shot within the first 1–2 seconds after pressing the double shot button. … The steam control dial becomes stiff after initial use, making it harder to operate smoothly …

  13. J*** 2/5 25 January 2026 John Lewis

Unfortunately I have now had two and am about to send the second one to landfill (after 3 years) to join the first. The first one died after 2.5 years. … These machines are just not built to last and once out of warranty (2 years) are apparently very costly to repair. Sage quoted £178 just for the labour - parts would be extra …

  14. S*** 5/5 17 January 2026 John Lewis

We bought this to replace our old barista express and it's just the same, but better. Perfect espresso and milk once you perfect the technique…

  15. P*** I*** 5/5 25 December 2025 John Lewis Truffle Black; syndicated review

I'm loving my Barista Pro in matte black—it's sleek and performs amazingly! The milk frothing is perfect, and the espresso tastes incredible. …

  16. R*** 1/5 31 October 2024 John Lewis

Purchased the Sage Barista Pro from John Lewis & initially very pleased with it. However developed a problem with the steam wand & Sage want to charge £170 for … To my mind unacceptable for a machine of this cost £600+ after less than 3 years. Doesn't appear to be of durable …

  17. F*** 5/5 5 August 2024 John Lewis

I purchased this machine a little under a year ago and unfortunately we experienced a rare failure in the solenoid valve and had to return it. That being said John Lewis's tech support and 2 year cover was a god send. …

  21. Customer 5/5 6 May 2023 Currys Currys customer via Feefo

Good Points: Easy to use Good features Lots of accessories Improvement Points: The lid for the water tank is very narrow so it can be difficult to get the filter in and/or pour water in without it spilling

  22. Customer 4/5 30 January 2023 Currys Currys customer via Feefo

Good Points: Great Style Coffee Machine - Easy to use & easy to clean. Able to make pretty good coffee. Improvement Points: Nothing close to their top series Oracle touch. Main issue is the manual tamping which do not give enough pressure to press the coffee and the coffee taste nothing like Oracle touch.

  23. Customer 2/5 29 December 2022 Currys Currys customer via Feefo

  24. Customer 5/5 14 December 2022 Currys Currys customer via Feefo

Good Points: looks great in our kitchen Improvement Points: a little slow to steam but nothing unexpected for a small machine. Takes some practice to get the settings right but with a nice fine grind (3) and a 15 second brew you get great espresso with crema on top

  25. Customer 2/5 12 December 2022 Currys Currys customer via Feefo

Good Points: It could have been the wrong coffee beans( i doub it) but i wasted 1 kg beans bag and the coffee was horrible Improvement Points: The look and the coffee

  26. Customer 4/5 15 July 2022 Currys Currys customer via Feefo

Good Points: Nice basic machine, easy to use Improvement Points: Doesn’t have low water recognition, will start a cup even if unable to complete due to insufficient water, so you have to keep checking the back visually.

Sage Breville Barista Pro Review and Test

The Sage Barista Pro is an upgraded espresso machine featuring rapid ThermoJet heating and a powerful 4-hole steam wand that creates silky microfoam for latte art. It offers easy digital temperature adjustments that allow it to extract both dark and light roasts effectively, although it lacks an analogue pressure gauge and caps pre-infusion at 10 seconds. Overall, it delivers a fast and ergonomic workflow that makes it a compelling choice over the Barista Express.

Barista Pro Review + Milk Steaming & Latte Art Tutorial From Pro Barista Trainer

The Sage/Breville Barista Pro offers great value for coffee enthusiasts looking to embrace home espresso as a hobby, featuring an integrated grinder, ThermoJet fast heating, and digital shot timer. While it produces café-quality drinks and heats up almost instantly, temperature consistency between consecutive shots requires pre-warming the group head and portafilter with a flush. Overall, it provides strong performance and useful features at a relatively low price compared to standalone setups.

Sage / Breville Barista Pro Review - Video 1 of the New Barista Pro Series.

The Sage Barista Pro is an exceptional all-in-one espresso machine that offers significant improvements over the Barista Express, making it well worth the extra cost. It heats up in just three seconds, produces steam almost instantly, and features a clear digital screen with an integrated shot timer and adjustable brew temperatures. Although dialling in requires purging a notable amount of coffee between grind adjustments, it produces very high-quality espresso and textured milk.

Breville/Sage Barista Pro REVIEW. Is this the machine to replace the Breville Barista Express?

The Breville Barista Pro is a significant step up from the Barista Express, featuring a 3-second heat-up time, an intuitive LCD interface, and an upgraded steam wand that produces silky microfoam. While its 54mm portafilter and tendency to overheat water when left idling are minor drawbacks, it provides great value for beginners seeking cafe-quality coffee at home.
