The Sage Barista Pro is a manual espresso machine with a built-in 30-setting conical burr grinder, ThermoJet heating that is ready in seconds, PID temperature control and a manual steam wand. Owners praise the espresso and milk quality, the very fast heat-up and the compact, solid build, and many upgraders rate it clearly above the Barista Express. It is hands-on: grind, dose and shot time must be dialled in, factory grind settings often need adjusting, and the built-in grinder draws the most complaints about consistency. A minority report failures (steam wand, solenoid, display, grinder) and costly out-of-warranty repairs; no independent long-term reliability data is available. It suits people who want to learn café-style espresso at home and value speed; it is a poor fit for anyone wanting push-button convenience.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
The Barista Pro is a 1680 W manual espresso machine with a 15 bar Italian pump, PID temperature control and ThermoJet heating.
Sage claims the ThermoJet system reaches extraction temperature in 3 seconds and uses up to 32% less energy a year than a Thermoblock system.
It has an integrated conical burr grinder with 30 grind settings and a 250 g bean hopper. Sage's UK page describes the burrs as Baratza European Precision Burrs.
Operation is manual: you dose into a 54 mm portafilter, tamp with the integrated tamper and texture milk with a steam wand. John Lewis lists it as 'Automatic or manual: Manual', although some retailers call it bean to cup.
It has a 1.9 L removable water tank, an LCD with button controls, and 1 and 2 cup volumetric shot control.
Sage, John Lewis and Currys all state a 2-year guarantee.
Most reviewers at Amazon.co.uk, John Lewis and Currys praise the espresso and milk drinks, often calling them café standard once the machine is dialled in.
Owners frequently highlight the very fast heat-up and quick readiness for steaming, especially those upgrading from a Barista Express.
Many reviewers say it takes time to dial in. Several found the default grind too fine or the factory settings far off, and a few adjusted the inner burr. Some note it is not a push-button machine.
A recurring complaint is inconsistent or clogging grinding and variable shot times. A minority of owners went on to buy a separate grinder.
Some reviews and forum posts report failures: a steam wand or steam dial fault, a solenoid valve, an LCD, a grinder after weeks, a cracked ThermoJet elbow leaking, and a steaming pump fault. Some owners were quoted costly repairs outside the 2-year warranty. These reports are anecdotal and do not establish a failure rate.
Owners upgrading from a Barista Express or Express Impress describe the Pro as faster, quieter and better at steaming. One notes its 4-hole steam tip versus 1 hole on the Express.
Reviewers like the looks, compact footprint, build quality and ease of cleaning.
Individual reviewers mention minor gripes: a narrow water tank lid, no low-water stop mid-shot, hot water dispensing that runs for a fixed 60 seconds, a hopper that will not take a full 225 g bag, and a tank that does not sit steady.
Trusted Reviews (2020) called it a stellar manual machine with a great steam wand and super-fast heat-up. Its cons were that it is un-intuitive for novice baristas, prone to splashing into espresso cups, and has a rear tank that is awkward to refill in small kitchens.
Which? has tested the SES878BSS (first reviewed August 2019, last checked July 2023), but its score and verdict are only visible to members.
At the October 2026 check, Sage UK, Amazon.co.uk and Currys sold it for about £600, while John Lewis charged £729. Sage's list price is £729.95, so £600 looks like a discount on the list price.
Sage's current UK page lists a dosing funnel and Baratza burrs. Currys' box contents omit the dosing funnel, and an Amazon reviewer said their unit came without the funnel or Baratza burrs. Some stock may therefore be an earlier specification.
The UK range includes Brushed Stainless Steel, Black Truffle, Black Stainless Steel, Sea Salt and Damson Blue, plus a special artwork edition. Sea Salt and Damson Blue were sold out on Sage UK at the check.
Several owners praise the steam wand for fast, consistent milk texturing. A few Currys reviewers find steaming a little slow to start or say the frother takes practice.
A small number of reviewers complain about Sage customer service, for example over a promotion claim or warranty contact. Others praise John Lewis's handling of a return under its 2-year cover.

Summarised from the 162 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 162.
UK buyers mostly love the espresso and milk drinks the Barista Pro makes, and many say the results rival a coffee shop. The near-instant heat-up, quick steaming and compact, well-built design are the most praised points, especially by owners upgrading from a Barista Express. The common caveat is that this is a hands-on machine: expect to spend time, and some beans, dialling in grind size, dose and shot time. Several owners found the factory grind settings off and had to adjust the inner burr. The main criticisms are an inconsistent or clogging built-in grinder and a minority of failures (steam wand or dial, solenoid, display, grinder), sometimes just after the 2-year warranty, with repair costs owners felt were high. A few find it too complicated for push-button use.
Summarised from 162 reviews; 2 reviews about delivery, packaging or the seller were left out. The summary is drawn from opinions that recur in the reviews read; each theme shows how many reviews mention it. These counts are not a rate and do not apply to every unit.

Great machine for those prepared to invest just a little time to learning how to get the best results from its capabilities. The current BARISTA PRO is the best *** machine in the Sage stable, in my experience. Produces a superior hot , tasty coffee, slickly and quickly and economically. Compared with my previous Sage Barista Express Impress, it is streets ahead in every way. Love it!

This is chalk and cheese compared to the Tassimo pod machine we used to have before going on a barista course. It looks the part and is easy enough to use. The default grind size & duration and (expressing) water temperature are way out though. … Nevertheless, I’m getting closer to a great coffee with every tweak and have just about cracked milk frothing too. Would I change it if I had the opportunity? Absolutely not. I’m having way too much fun.

I purchased this to replace a similar De'Longhi coffee machine (the Specialista Prestigio), which failed after only 3 years of use. I have now been using the Sage machine for 6 months and it is, in my opinion, by far the better designed machine. … In particular, the performance of the milk wand is far superior to that of the De'Longhi machine and is quick and consistent to use. …

This is a great coffee machine once you’ve taken the time to set it up correctly for your beans. The build quality is excellent, with a solid stainless steel finish that feels premium and well made. It does take some time to “dial in” the settings. On the default grind setting, the coffee came out far too fine. Even increasing the grind size to the maximum didn’t fully solve the issue, so we had to adjust the burr grinder. …

This is an upgrade on my Sage Barista Express (also an excellent machine) and I’m already enjoying the significantly faster times to heat up, create steam, foam milk, and be ready for the next cup. … Reading some of the other reviews, I think it’s important to point out that this is NOT a bean-to-cup machine. It’s primarily a manual operation and you need to understand or want to learn the fundamentals of grind, dose, tamp, and extraction to get good results.
J*** C*** 4/5 17 January 2023 Amazon Brushed Stainless Steel
The Thermojet internals heat up in seconds - much quicker from button press to being able to make espresso than with the Express. … The steam wand - It looks similar but it has 4 holes vs 1 on the express. Doesn’t sound like much but I'm steaming faster and the foam is much better than I ever achieved on the Express … The grinder is the only thing I'm left thinking I might need to improve upon in the future on an otherwise excellent machine.

The machine is great, a few fiddley parts to keep clean and the bean to coffee filter always grinds too much coffee so makes a mess and wastes coffee. What is most disappointing is the machine was advertised and came with information about claiming a free barista pack worth £150.00. … Very poor customer service.

Wouldn't reccommend this machiene. Bought it as an upgrade from my Barista Express & I am going to go back to my old Barista express instead. On the pro: The grinder clogged up as i was dialing it in and was not accessible to clean. The coffee did not run through well & the design is poor. Doesn't run through enough water either. …

This is a great coffee machine, brews very nice coffee once your have dialled it in. The steamer is very good with 4 holes for quicker steaming and the time to warm up is insane, about 3 seconds before its ready to brew coffee. …

When it works, it produces very good espresso with consistent temperature and solid steam performance. … The machine occasionally stops the shot within the first 1–2 seconds after pressing the double shot button. … The steam control dial becomes stiff after initial use, making it harder to operate smoothly …

Unfortunately I have now had two and am about to send the second one to landfill (after 3 years) to join the first. The Sage Barista Pro is an upgraded espresso machine featuring rapid ThermoJet heating and a powerful 4-hole steam wand that creates silky microfoam for latte art. It offers easy digital temperature adjustments that allow it to extract both dark and light roasts effectively, although it lacks an analogue pressure gauge and caps pre-infusion at 10 seconds. Overall, it delivers a fast and ergonomic workflow that makes it a compelling choice over the Barista Express.
YouTube · Review
The Sage/Breville Barista Pro offers great value for coffee enthusiasts looking to embrace home espresso as a hobby, featuring an integrated grinder, ThermoJet fast heating, and digital shot timer. While it produces café-quality drinks and heats up almost instantly, temperature consistency between consecutive shots requires pre-warming the group head and portafilter with a flush. Overall, it provides strong performance and useful features at a relatively low price compared to standalone setups.
YouTube · Review
The Sage Barista Pro is an exceptional all-in-one espresso machine that offers significant improvements over the Barista Express, making it well worth the extra cost. It heats up in just three seconds, produces steam almost instantly, and features a clear digital screen with an integrated shot timer and adjustable brew temperatures. Although dialling in requires purging a notable amount of coffee between grind adjustments, it produces very high-quality espresso and textured milk.
YouTube · Review
The Breville Barista Pro is a significant step up from the Barista Express, featuring a 3-second heat-up time, an intuitive LCD interface, and an upgraded steam wand that produces silky microfoam. While its 54mm portafilter and tendency to overheat water when left idling are minor drawbacks, it provides great value for beginners seeking cafe-quality coffee at home.

This page is compiled from manufacturer, store, review and video sources; every piece of information links to the source it was read from. Technical values are as stated by the manufacturer or store; user experiences are summarised from the reviews read and do not apply to every unit. We do not test products ourselves.
