At a glance

The Sage Bambino is a compact, button-operated manual espresso machine. It has a 15 bar pump with low-pressure pre-infusion, PID temperature control, a 3-second ThermoJet heat-up and a manual steam wand. It is aimed at people moving up from pod or capsule machines who want real espresso and latte art in a small space. Owners praise how quickly it is ready, how easy it is to use and the quality of the espresso and steamed milk once dialled in. The main drawbacks are vibration and rattling that can push light cups off the drip tray, a cheap-feeling plastic tamper and portafilter, and some dripping after shots. It also takes ground coffee only, so a separate grinder is needed for best results. If you want automatic milk frothing, the Bambino Plus is the step up. Independent long-term reliability data was not available; a few owners report faults.

Strengths

  • Ready to brew in about 3 seconds thanks to the ThermoJet heater, confirmed in testing.
  • PID temperature control and low-pressure pre-infusion are unusual at this size and price.
  • Compact and simple to operate, with buttons for 1 cup, 2 cups, hot water and steam.
Show all (5)
  • Good espresso and strong steam for milk drinks once dialled in.
  • 2-year manufacturer's warranty.

Things to consider

  • The light body and drip-tray grille vibrate and rattle during extraction; light cups can shift off the tray.
  • The supplied plastic tamper and light portafilter feel cheap.
  • No solenoid valve, so the portafilter can drip after the shot and leave a wet puck.
Show all (6)
  • Sensitive to grind and dose, and milk steaming is fully manual, so expect a learning curve.
  • Ground coffee only; no built-in grinder.
  • Some owners report faults; long-term reliability is not independently documented.
Who is it for, and who is it not for?

Good for

  • First-time home baristas upgrading from pod machines who want manual espresso in a small kitchen.
  • People who want a drink quickly without waiting for a boiler to heat.

May not suit

  • Buyers who want hands-free milk frothing; the Bambino Plus offers automatic texturing.
  • Anyone who wants an all-in-one bean-to-cup setup without buying a separate grinder.
  • Users bothered by a rattly, lightweight build or who mostly use small, light cups.

Owners mostly like the Bambino as a small, simple first espresso machine. It heats up almost instantly, fits on a crowded worktop and, once grind and dose are dialled in, makes good espresso with strong steam for milk drinks. The most common complaint is that the light body and drip-tray grille vibrate and rattle during a shot, so small or light cups can creep off the tray. Many find the supplied plastic tamper and portafilter cheap-feeling, and newcomers mention a learning curve with grind size and manual milk steaming. Some would have preferred the Bambino Plus for its automatic milk frothing. A few report post-shot dripping, coffee not hot enough, or faults such as a steam wand failing. Opinions on value are split: some think it is good for the money, others that it is pricey or cheaper elsewhere.

  1. J*** 5/5 30 September 2026 Argos

Steam pressure for texturising milk is great, espressos come out with a good crema. Nice to have little extras like the milk jug and the cleaning tool for the steam spout. Overall it feels to be of good, solid quality, we’re very happy with our choice

  2. E*** 5/5 24 June 2026 John Lewis

-Easy to use machine -Small so fits nicely on the kitchen side

  3. D*** 5/5 21 June 2026 John Lewis

…Like other reviews, I've found it does vibrate when you're pulling a shot. Once while using a lighter glass cup it started to move off the drip tray. Whilst using a normal china mug this hasn't happened… The tamper it comes with isn't up to much.

  4. m*** 5/5 2 June 2026 John Lewis

…Cheap, flimsy tamper, the included tamper feels like an afterthought as it's light, plasticky, and not very nice to use. Rattly operation as there is a noticeable vibration and rattling during extraction. It doesn't affect the coffee, but it does take away from the…

  5. H*** 5/5 31 March 2026 Argos

Brilliant machine, easy to set up, handy attachments, good espresso pour and good frothing

  6. B*** 4/5 21 February 2026 John Lewis

…The price is too much for what it is really, especially as we found out it was being sold more cheaply at other outlets - so if you are going to buy it, look around first

  7. J*** 1/5 7 February 2026 John Lewis

Had this machine and it's great when it works but it broke twice without any fix, so one exchange then a refund from JL. Would personally avoid this brand in the future as not reliable.

  8. A*** 2/5 30 November 2025 John Lewis

I bought this recently looking forward to making espresso coffees and frothing milk. The coffee does not seem to heat up enough and the milk does not froth. I wish I would have got the bambino plus. The milk wand also stopped working with nothing coming out.

  9. G*** 2/5 13 August 2025 John Lewis

Aesthetically the machine is very nice and produces good tasting espresso. However the cup tray rattles very loudly when the machine is running and the cup has to be held in place to prevent it from moving off the tray completely. This is completely unacceptable for machine in this price range.

  10. S*** 5/5 31 July 2025 John Lewis

…best investment made for along time, I have partnered it with sage coffee grinder so even better coffee, the tutorials from sage are so easy to follow better than instruction book

  11. K*** 3/5 1 June 2025 Argos

Coffee nice. It drips constantly. Coffee doesn’t come through consistently. tried different grinds. Considering sending it back

  12. C*** 4/5 12 April 2025 Argos

A month into ownership and after a few poor results at first, which were entirely of my making, I’m getting great espressos from my Bambino. Much quicker than previous machines I’ve had. The only negatives are minor and well documented by other owners, ie, a fairly low quality pod holder and tamper but both are quite up to the job. One other thing is that changing the pod from single to double shot is quite hard on the fingers but to be honest, I rarely need to do this.

  13. L*** Q*** 5/5 21 January 2025 Amazon Brushed Stainless Steel

…Drip Tray Vibration: Lightweight cups still move slightly during brewing, so I use heavier mugs to avoid spills.

  14. r*** 1/5 31 December 2024 John Lewis

Masive design fault, vibration is intolerable on this machine, small cups simply vibrate right off the machine and the shot goes everywhere.

  15. T*** 3/5 24 December 2024 John Lewis

Poor quality compared to other Sage coffee machines. In short, buy the Barista Express instead (it's well worth the difference). All the parts are too light - the tamper feels flimsy and the machine is so light that it vibrates excessively, sometimes almost causing the cup to fall off…

  16. L*** G*** 5/5 18 October 2024 Amazon Black Truffle

…temperature could be a little hotter, that's my only gripe.

  17. L*** 3/5 12 May 2024 Argos

Bought this to replace a Curry's own brand manual espresso machine. I do feel disappointed. It rattles and splashed coffee everywhere. But the coffee is nice and it is quick to make the coffee. Wish I had saved my money and bought the cheap Curry's machine.

  18. S*** J*** M*** 5/5 15 January 2024 Amazon

…wouldn't heat the water up. I rang the support number and had that one swapped out within 2 days…

  19. T*** 4/5 26 August 2023 Amazon

…the grill on top of the tray drip vibrates a lot, and lighter cups may move around enough that the coffee misses them.

Sage Bambino Review Part 2 - Demonstration

The Sage Bambino demonstrates capable espresso extraction and manual milk steaming, matching the cup quality of the Bambino Plus when properly dialled in. Although it lacks an integrated shot timer and comes with a rather lightweight tamper, it produces good steam texture for latte art and has a decent hot water spout for Americanos. In the UK, it conveniently comes supplied with both traditional unpressurised and dual-walled pressurised filter baskets.

sage (breville) bambino espresso machine | *honest review*

The Sage Bambino is an affordable, compact, and user-friendly espresso machine that heats up in only three seconds and makes rich, coffee-shop-quality coffee. While its lightweight build means you need to hold the machine down when locking the portafilter and it comes with a basic plastic tamper, it remains a fantastic option for home brewing.

Breville Bambino Review: Is It Worth It?

The Breville Bambino is a capable, entry-level espresso machine that features a 3-second ThermoJet heat-up time, low-pressure pre-infusion, and a 9-bar overpressure valve. Whilst it lacks a 3-way solenoid valve and is light enough to slide on the counter, it produces quality espresso and represents good value when paired with a decent grinder.

YouTube · Comparison

Bambino Vs Bambino Plus - Which is Best For You?

The Sage Bambino is an ultra-compact espresso machine that heats up in just three seconds and is capable of delivering outstanding espresso when paired with a good grinder. It relies on manual milk steaming and features a fixed 93°C brew temperature that is best suited to medium-to-dark roasts. While it lacks a 3-way solenoid valve, this actually prevents its very small drip tray from filling up too quickly.

How we evaluate, and the limits

This page is compiled from manufacturer, store, review and video sources; every piece of information links to the source it was read from. Technical values are as stated by the manufacturer or store; user experiences are summarised from the reviews read and do not apply to every unit. We do not test products ourselves.
