The Sage Bambino is a compact, button-operated manual espresso machine. It has a 15 bar pump with low-pressure pre-infusion, PID temperature control, a 3-second ThermoJet heat-up and a manual steam wand. It is aimed at people moving up from pod or capsule machines who want real espresso and latte art in a small space. Owners praise how quickly it is ready, how easy it is to use and the quality of the espresso and steamed milk once dialled in. The main drawbacks are vibration and rattling that can push light cups off the drip tray, a cheap-feeling plastic tamper and portafilter, and some dripping after shots. It also takes ground coffee only, so a separate grinder is needed for best results. If you want automatic milk frothing, the Bambino Plus is the step up. Independent long-term reliability data was not available; a few owners report faults.

What the features mean in everyday use.
The Bambino uses a 15 bar Italian pump with low-pressure pre-infusion followed by 9 bar extraction, a ThermoJet heater and PID digital temperature control, with a 54 mm portafilter dosed at 18 g.
Sage claims the machine is ready in 3 seconds. Expert Reviews' test found this claim 'entirely true', and owners on Amazon and John Lewis often mention the fast heat-up.
Milk texturing is fully manual via a steam wand, with no automatic milk settings. The more expensive Bambino Plus offers those.
Owners at Argos, Amazon and John Lewis repeatedly describe the machine as easy to set up and use and as compact enough for a small worktop.
Most reviewers report good espresso with crema and strong steam pressure for milk. Expert Reviews rated results 'uniformly good, but not mind-blowing'.
The most frequent complaint is that the light machine and drip-tray grille vibrate and rattle during extraction, so light cups can move or shift off the tray.
Several owners and Expert Reviews describe the supplied plastic tamper and the 54 mm portafilter as cheap or insubstantial; some buy an upgraded tamper.
The Bambino has no solenoid valve, so the portafilter tends to drip at the end of a shot and the puck can be wet (Expert Reviews). An owner on a coffee forum reports the same dripping.
Getting good shots requires dialling in grind and dose. Expert Reviews found it prone to choking with slightly finer grinds or higher doses, and a number of owners mention an initial learning curve or difficulty with manual milk steaming.
A small number of reviewers report faults, such as a unit that would not heat water (replaced by support), a steam wand that stopped working, and a machine that broke twice. This sample cannot indicate a failure rate.
The machine takes ground coffee only and has no built-in grinder, so buyers wanting fresh-ground espresso need a separate grinder.
At the time of checking, Sage, Argos and John Lewis all listed the brushed stainless steel Bambino at about £330.
Applies to one variant
Expert Reviews felt the £329 RRP puts it close to more capable rivals such as the Gaggia Classic. Some owners also found it cheaper elsewhere and advise shopping around, while others consider it good value.
The machine comes with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.

Summarised from the 117 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 117.
Owners mostly like the Bambino as a small, simple first espresso machine. It heats up almost instantly, fits on a crowded worktop and, once grind and dose are dialled in, makes good espresso with strong steam for milk drinks. The most common complaint is that the light body and drip-tray grille vibrate and rattle during a shot, so small or light cups can creep off the tray. Many find the supplied plastic tamper and portafilter cheap-feeling, and newcomers mention a learning curve with grind size and manual milk steaming. Some would have preferred the Bambino Plus for its automatic milk frothing. A few report post-shot dripping, coffee not hot enough, or faults such as a steam wand failing. Opinions on value are split: some think it is good for the money, others that it is pricey or cheaper elsewhere.

Steam pressure for texturising milk is great, espressos come out with a good crema. Nice to have little extras like the milk jug and the cleaning tool for the steam spout. Overall it feels to be of good, solid quality, we’re very happy with our choice

…Like other reviews, I've found it does vibrate when you're pulling a shot. Once while using a lighter glass cup it started to move off the drip tray. Whilst using a normal china mug this hasn't happened… The tamper it comes with isn't up to much.

…Cheap, flimsy tamper, the included tamper feels like an afterthought as it's light, plasticky, and not very nice to use. Rattly operation as there is a noticeable vibration and rattling during extraction. It doesn't affect the coffee, but it does take away from the…

Had this machine and it's great when it works but it broke twice without any fix, so one exchange then a refund from JL. Would personally avoid this brand in the future as not reliable.

I bought this recently looking forward to making espresso coffees and frothing milk. The coffee does not seem to heat up enough and the milk does not froth. I wish I would have got the bambino plus. The milk wand also stopped working with nothing coming out.
G*** 2/5 13 August 2025 John Lewis
Aesthetically the machine is very nice and produces good tasting espresso. However the cup tray rattles very loudly when the machine is running and the cup has to be held in place to prevent it from moving off the tray completely. This is completely unacceptable for machine in this price range.

Coffee nice. It drips constantly. Coffee doesn’t come through consistently. tried different grinds. Considering sending it back

A month into ownership and after a few poor results at first, which were entirely of my making, I’m getting great espressos from my Bambino. Much quicker than previous machines I’ve had. The only negatives are minor and well documented by other owners, ie, a fairly low quality pod holder and tamper but both are quite up to the job. One other thing is that changing the pod from single to double shot is quite hard on the fingers but to be honest, I rarely need to do this.

Masive design fault, vibration is intolerable on this machine, small cups simply vibrate right off the machine and the shot goes everywhere.
T*** 3/5 24 December 2024 John Lewis
Poor quality compared to other Sage coffee machines. In short, buy the Barista Express instead (it's well worth the difference). All the parts are too light - the tamper feels flimsy and the machine is so light that it vibrates excessively, sometimes almost causing the cup to fall off…

Bought this to replace a Curry's own brand manual espresso machine. I do feel disappointed. It rattles and splashed coffee everywhere. But the coffee is nice and it is quick to make the coffee. Wish I had saved my money and bought the cheap Curry's machine.

The Sage Bambino demonstrates capable espresso extraction and manual milk steaming, matching the cup quality of the Bambino Plus when properly dialled in. Although it lacks an integrated shot timer and comes with a rather lightweight tamper, it produces good steam texture for latte art and has a decent hot water spout for Americanos. In the UK, it conveniently comes supplied with both traditional unpressurised and dual-walled pressurised filter baskets.
YouTube · Review
The Sage Bambino is an affordable, compact, and user-friendly espresso machine that heats up in only three seconds and makes rich, coffee-shop-quality coffee. While its lightweight build means you need to hold the machine down when locking the portafilter and it comes with a basic plastic tamper, it remains a fantastic option for home brewing.
YouTube · Review
The Breville Bambino is a capable, entry-level espresso machine that features a 3-second ThermoJet heat-up time, low-pressure pre-infusion, and a 9-bar overpressure valve. Whilst it lacks a 3-way solenoid valve and is light enough to slide on the counter, it produces quality espresso and represents good value when paired with a decent grinder.
YouTube · Comparison
The Sage Bambino is an ultra-compact espresso machine that heats up in just three seconds and is capable of delivering outstanding espresso when paired with a good grinder. It relies on manual milk steaming and features a fixed 93°C brew temperature that is best suited to medium-to-dark roasts. While it lacks a 3-way solenoid valve, this actually prevents its very small drip tray from filling up too quickly.
