The Sage Barista Express Impress (SES876) is a manual espresso machine with a built-in 25-setting conical grinder and Sage's Impress lever. The lever doses and tamps the coffee and gives feedback on the dose. It also has a 15 bar pump with PID-controlled Thermocoil heating and a manual steam wand. UK owners mostly praise the coffee and say the assisted tamping makes espresso approachable and much less messy, especially when upgrading from pods or the older Barista Express. Expect a learning curve to dial in the grind and to master milk steaming. A minority report leaks, poor extractions or uneven tamps. It suits people who want to learn hands-on espresso with some help, not those who want one-touch milk drinks. Long-term reliability evidence is limited to a few owner reports.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
The integrated steel conical burr grinder has 25 grind settings and a 250 g hopper. The older Barista Express (BES875UK) has 16 settings.
Sage says the Impress lever applies a constant 10 kg tamp finished with a 7° twist. The machine shows dose-level feedback and corrects the next dose automatically. The Barista Express uses a manual magnetic tamper instead.
It has a 15 bar Italian pump, a 1600 W Thermocoil heater with PID temperature control, adjustable brew temperature, volumetric shot control and a pressure gauge. Sage says it pre-infuses at low pressure, extracts at 9 bar and delivers water at 93 °C.
The 2 L water tank is removable. Rated power is 1850 W, the machine weighs 10.98 kg, and UK retailers list it at about 41 cm high, 33 cm wide and 38 cm deep, with room for cups up to 12 cm tall.
Milk is steamed by hand with a manual steam wand and a 480 ml jug. There is no automatic milk system.
UK sales come with a 2-year manufacturer guarantee: repair, replace or refund at Sage's discretion.
UK store reviewers at Argos, John Lewis and Currys most often praise the espresso quality, calling it café-standard and better than the pod machines they replaced.
Many reviewers, including first-time espresso users, call it easy or user-friendly once it has been set up.
Owners, including those upgrading from the Barista Express, say the automatic dosing and assisted tamping cut mess and guesswork. A UK owner reported after three years that the tamping system still worked as well as when new.
Many reviewers needed several attempts to dial in the grind size and dose. Early shots were weak or inconsistent until they found the right setting.
Some reviewers find the manual steam wand slow to get going, hard to master or hard to wipe clean. One notes the machine can only brew or steam, not both at once.
A minority of reviews report problems: a tank that leaked on two units, very short or blocked extractions, a dose fault replaced under support, and tamps that look uneven and need redoing.
Individual reviewers mention no warning when the water tank runs empty, a hot-water spout that splashes, a finish that scratches easily and a plastic grinder chute cover.
Reviewers like the sturdy feel and the look on the worktop. Some chose a colour finish to match their kitchen.
Ideal Home's three-year report says the machine still looks good and the tamping still works. Dark-roast beans left oils in the grinder and a bitter taste that took weeks to clear. The reviewer notes newer rivals now offer more for less money.
TechRadar (September 2022) rated it 4.5/5, praising its looks and easy, great-tasting coffee. Its cons were the large worktop footprint, a smaller-than-hoped water tank and no ground-coffee or pod option.
Which? first reviewed the model in February 2023 and lists its release as July 2022. Its score and Best Buy status are behind the paywall.
Major UK retailers (Sage, Argos, Currys, John Lewis, AO) were selling it at about £599–£600 against a £729.95 list price when checked.
Several reviewers call it expensive or an investment but say it pays for itself against coffee-shop or pod spending.
The 4.8/5 from 1,168 reviews shown on the Currys and AO pages is a Feefo group that also includes the older Barista Express. The Currys SKU-level Feefo pages show 24 and 33 reviews for this model.
When checked, Amazon.co.uk offered only used or refurbished units. Most listings carry EU codes (…4EEU1) rather than UK …4GUK1 codes.
The assisted dosing, tamping and grinder suit people stepping up from pods who want to learn manual espresso with less mess. Anyone wanting one-touch milk drinks would be better served by a bean-to-cup automatic.

UK owners mostly praise the espresso. Many say the Impress dosing and assisted tamping make a manual machine approachable and much tidier than the older Barista Express or a pod machine. Most needed a few attempts to dial in the grind before shots tasted right. Several find the manual steam wand slow, tricky to master or awkward to wipe clean, and note it cannot brew and steam at the same time. A minority report faults: a leaking tank, very short or blocked extractions, a dose fault, or tamps that look uneven and need redoing. Individual owners also dislike the lack of a low-water warning, the splashy hot-water spout, a finish that scratches easily and the plastic grinder chute. Pod-machine upgraders and previous Barista Express owners are among the happiest. Several call it expensive but feel it pays for itself against coffee-shop spending.

We have had this for just over 3 weeks now and while we are still learning, have been enjoying making coffee and after the initial cost, should save some money in the long run

Bought this to replace a previous sage machine. Improvements on the impress simplifies grinding and makes the machine much easier to use and keep looking clean. Would recommend.

Absolutely excellent, easy to use but with a very good level of tuneable features to really dial in your favourite coffee. The tamper is a great feature, reduces the mess and the guess work. The grinder is very high quality as well as the feel of the rest of the machine. …
A*** 5/5 25 August 2026 Argos
Loving it so far, much less difficult to use and far less messy to use than some reviews suggested. … Already it is making better coffee than I ever got from Nespresso.
T*** 5/5 25 August 2026 Argos Syndicated from sageappliances.com
Exactly what we wanted, easy enough for everyone to use and makes great coffee. Quick heat up and automatic dosing means it's quick enough to make coffee before work.

Love this machine. I used to have a bambino plus … Lovely coffee, the machine feels sturdy, the operation is simple. The steam wand takes a while to get going, but this isn't really an issue. … the drip tray gathers a lot, not sure whether that is to be expected or not. …

Absolutely fantastic! I'm so glad I bought this semi-automatic model. It makes coffee preparation so much easier, and I'd definitely recommend it to any coffee lover! ☕

Love this machine takes some tweaking to get your coffee how you like it… However milk frother 'wand' does not wipe as clean as Nespresso Creasita machine which is poor. Frothed milk sticks to the wand… Otherwise would be 5* Free coffee beans offer was poor and beans sent very bitter so gave them away !

…I liked the fact that the Impress system removes the need to manually tamp the coffee… There was definitely a learning curve. My first few attempts produced very weak coffee… once I found the correct grind setting everything clicked into place… The main limitation is that it can only brew coffee or steam milk one at a time… As a first step into bean-to-cup espresso, the Barista Express Impress has been fantastic…

Overall, I am happy with the Barista Express Impress. Colour was as expected, black, and the functions are great. The only downside is that it doesn't advise you when the water tank is empty. You only discover when you try to make a coffee, nothing happens, and the machine makes a weird noise.
m*** 5/5 12 May 2026 John Lewis
I've just traded up from the Sage Barista Express… After a couple of tries with the grind adjustment it produced 2 perfect coffees with nil mess and also saved time dosing and measuring. The pressure was spot on and the crema just right. The milk wand appeared to be quicker at heating foaming the milk…

A 2 litre tank leaks about 800 ml within a matter of days. Returned the first machine for a replacement and the second machine was even worse, also making horrible noises. Returned for a refund. No more Sage for us!

Really lovely machine. Took me a little while to get my coffee how I want it. Although the price tag is a little extravagant i worked out that my subscription to another brand was adding up to £60 plus a month… Easy machine to use and learnt quite a bit on YouTube too.

We have had this machine for 3 weeks now. We have had a barista express before so we were looking to improve the mess from the coffee grounds. This machine is much better in that respect… The water spout splashes water on the machine and around the worktop.

I am so happy with the impress, it can be as simple or complex as you want/need. My only reservation is the plastic cover of the chute from the coffee grinder. A poor material amongst better materials of the machine.

Great machine . Gives a lovely coffee . Still can't seem to master the correct foam for art but that's more me than the machine . Scratches very easily even when I'm super careful . So far so good though . Happy I bought it

Bought this machine just before Christmas after researching the right machine for me and so far I'm very disappointed. Right from the start there seems to be issues with the extraction time and also sometimes nothing comes out the portafilter at all. The best extraction time I've achieved is 17 seconds, of which 8 of those are pre-infusion! …

Excellent quality, Auto Tamping really works! Grinder fairly quiet. Dialing-in easy and repeatable. Can't get the hang of the Milk Steamer, so perhaps would have preferred with an Auto Steamer??

Very pleased with my Sage. I love my coffee and this was my treat from using pods. It takes time to brew the perfect cup but well worth it. All the instructions were easy to follow and I can now look forward to being my own barista 😂
A*** 4/5 8 July 2026 Currys Black Stainless Steel
Wanted a coffee maker where I actually make my own coffee, rather than just pressing a button. Previously I’ve had a Nespresso and other small coffee makers. The sage looks great and easy to clean. Still trying to work out the best tasting beans to add, and how fine a grain, so trial and error at the moment. The milk frother works great and you get hot coffee, not warm, so this is a big hit.

Great coffee machine and easy to operate despite it being able to do a range of functions. The stainless steel version is a lot more expensive than other colours but worth it that it would match other appliances as it's a feature piece sitting out in my kitchen

Great machine, great coffee, tad expensive.
M*** E*** 1/5 6 November 2023 Amazon Black Truffle; UK review
I was hoping for excellent coffee from this machine, but alas, its really a poor espresso machine. Firstly, the grinder. … the 'correct dose' level will still show a smiley face even when the dose varies by up to 3 grammes!! … after the 1st tamp, the puck looks as if it's been nowhere near a tamper, so you ALWAYS need to tamp twice. … none of the 'assistive' features of this actually work properly. …

The Sage / Breville Barista Express Impress delivers impressive espresso straight out of the box with virtually no learning curve. Its assisted dosing and tamping system is remarkably accurate and eliminates most of the usual mess and fuss. Although it lacks automatic milk steaming assistance, it produces hot, high-quality espresso far superior to standard bean-to-cup machines.
YouTube · Review
The Sage Barista Express Impress is an exceptionally well-built espresso machine that produces coffee shop-quality drinks at home. It features handy automated assistance like an intelligent dosing system and assisted tamping lever, though it is quite large and noisy. At around £730, it is a significant investment that requires some trial and error, making it ideal for dedicated coffee lovers.
YouTube · Review
The Sage Barista Express Impress is a versatile semi-automatic coffee machine that heats up in just 40 seconds and offers extensive customisation for grinding, temperature, and shot volume. It is capable of brewing balanced espresso with lasting crema and producing excellent milk microfoam. However, it can be complex to master, filter baskets are difficult to remove from the portafilter, and routine maintenance is relatively tedious.
YouTube · Review
The Breville Barista Express Impress is an entry-level espresso machine that offers an assisted tamping lever alongside automated volumetric dosing detection. While it provides good thermal stability and versatile manual pre-infusion controls, the low portafilter clearance limits distribution options and the pressure gauge can be imprecise.
