The Sage Barista Express (BES875UK) is a manual espresso machine with a built-in conical burr grinder, a 15-bar pump with PID temperature control, a 54 mm portafilter and a manual steam wand. It has been on sale since 2013 and is the entry model of Sage's Barista range. Owners mainly praise the coffee, which many compare to a café, and a good number report years of use. In return it asks for effort: there is a learning curve, the instructions are thin, it can be messy, and the grinder is loud. A minority of owners report pump-pressure, grinder-switch or leak failures, often after one to three years. Long-term reliability has not been independently measured. It suits people who want to learn espresso by hand, not those after one-touch coffee.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
The machine uses a 15-bar Italian pump, a 1600 W Thermocoil heater with PID temperature control and a 54 mm portafilter. Currys describes this as 15-bar pressure with 9-bar extraction.
It has a built-in steel conical burr grinder with 16 grind settings (per Sage and the Currys spec table), dose control and a 250 g bean hopper.
Tamping and milk texturing are manual: a removable magnetic tamper and a manual steam wand, with a pressure gauge for extraction feedback. It is not a one-touch machine.
Sage gives a 2-year repair, replace or refund guarantee, and Argos, Currys and John Lewis all show a 2-year guarantee. Lakeland's page mentions a 3-year guarantee.
It is a fairly large, heavy countertop machine: about 40 cm tall and 31-35 cm deep, weighing 10.6 kg.
Coffee quality is the most frequently praised point in UK store reviews: many owners describe café-quality espresso with good crema, especially with fresh beans.
Many reviewers say it takes practice, YouTube tutorials and dialling in of grind, dose and tamp before results are good. Several call this rewarding, while others find it fiddly or very difficult. Ideal Home calls it a 'hands-on' machine.
Most of the 1-2 star John Lewis reviews read describe failures: loss of pump pressure, a grinder activation switch that stops working, internal or rear leaks, and faulty replacements. These often occur after 1-3 years. A Home-Barista repair thread describes a constantly running pump. These are individual reports, not a failure rate.
A number of owners report many years of use, 6-10 years or more, or bought the same model again to replace an old one.
Some reviewers find it messy: the drip tray fills quickly after steam purges, grounds spread around, and cleaning can be a faff. Others say the removable tank and tray make maintenance easy.
A few reviewers mention a slow-to-heat or temperamental steam wand, or a stiff steam/hot water dial. Others praise the frothing results.
Several buyers say the in-box instructions are thin and they relied on online videos to learn the machine.
The brushed steel finish shows fingerprints, splashes and water spots. One owner of the black version reports the coating wearing off after years of use.
Ideal Home praises the looks, crema, customisable settings and accessories. It criticises a loud, high-pitched grinder, wasteful dosing that has to be adjusted by hand, a noisy steam wand and the awkward position of the steam dial.
Real Homes, after more than a year of use, found it 'hits the right middle ground between quality and affordability'. It noted it is designed for espresso rather than long coffee and suits users willing to learn.
Which? notes the Barista Express is the cheapest model in Sage's manual Barista range and was launched in 2013.
At the time of checking, the main UK retailers (Sage, Argos, AO, John Lewis, Currys) priced the brushed steel version at about £629-£630. AO offered a lower price to paid members, and Amazon.co.uk showed no featured offer.
In the UK it is sold in Brushed Stainless Steel (BES875UK) and Black Truffle (SES875BTR2GUK1), at the same price at Sage.

Summarised from the 102 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 102.
Owners mostly praise the espresso: once the grind, dose and tamp are dialled in, many say it matches coffee shops, especially with fresh beans, and several have used theirs for six to ten years or bought the same model again. The recurring caveat is effort. It is a hands-on machine with a real learning curve, thin in-box instructions and some mess from the drip tray and grounds. A minority of reviewers describe breakdowns such as lost pump pressure, a failed grinder switch or leaks, often after one to three years, and a few found repairs or support frustrating. Smaller complaints include a slow or stiff steam control and a finish that shows fingerprints.

This isn't a one push button instant coffee machine. If that's what you're looking for, click away now. … Cleaning is a bit of a faff. Tray comes out in three pieces laced with coffee dust and water, but that's the price of fine art I guess.
A*** 5/5 10 December 2023 Amazon Barista Express, Manual Tamping, Temp Control Milk Jug
Some advice: what the machine requires is some patience at the beginning or when you get a new coffee blend. You will need to adjust a bit the grind level, the amount of coffee, tamping and the time it needs for extraction. It might take a couple of not so good shots until you dial it in, but once you do you are good to go.
M*** 5/5 26 September 2026 Amazon Barista Express, Manual Tamping, Temp Control Milk Jug
This is by far the best entry level coffee machine for an enthusiastic home barista that you can get. The previous one I purchased (after attending my first London coffee festival) lasted me 10 years and is still in perfect working order! … I cannot recommend it highly enough.
L*** 4/5 11 January 2026 Amazon Barista Express, Manual Tamping, Temp Control Milk Jug
That said, the finish is a fingerprint and splash magnet, and it shows mess very quickly. … The steam wand works well, but it takes longer than I expected to heat up, which can make the whole routine feel a bit tedious if you’re in a rush (comedically slow in some cases). … Size-wise, it’s also worth noting that this machine is quite large.

I knew I would Jinx it. It has just this week started to leak water from the back of the machine, So at the moment every two or three cups of coffee I have to lift the whole machine up and wipe away the water underneath it.

Its our first ever coffee machine… Yes it makes a nice coffee, however I find the switch that controls the steam and hot water function extremely stiff to use and not user friendly.

…Already the coffee is tasting better than our previous machine… The only problem that we are encountering is the rather alarming amount of water appearing in the tray underneath after making two coffees!

I only recently bought this to replace my De'Longhi one button Magnifica S, and wow, what a difference. It is, however, much more fiddly than a one-button espresso, but very worth it…

It's the perfect machine if you want to learn the art of coffee making… If you just want a machine that makes coffee at the press of a single button then look for other machines… far more rewarding, environmentally friendly and much cheaper than using pods…

We have had this machine for over eight years now and, overall, it is still as good as it was when we first bought it. It makes excellent coffee and is very easy to use. We bought this 3 and a half years ago and have had no end of trouble with it… A month back it would no longer grind beans… Now it's not grinding the beans properly and not building enough pressure… I would avoid this machine like the plague!

…While marketed as a bean-to-cup machine, it's worth noting that getting the best results requires some hands-on effort and dialling in the grind size and extraction takes a bit of practice. However, this is part of the machine's charm rather than a drawback…

Make a lovely coffee. Better than the Gaggia it replaced but still getting to grips with it. The post steam purge seems to expel more water than a single shot so having to empty the catchment tray more… the milk frother is the best I 've experienced…

Bought this about a month ago, such a great piece of kit, takes a while to get the hang of it(my advice is to watch alot of tutorials on you tube) The great tasting coffee is the reward for puting the effort in!
N*** 1/5 22 December 2025 John Lewis
This was a great machine and produced fantastic coffee. Then the pump system broke within a month. Pressure tests fail the majority of the time to less than a bar, extraction gives less than 50ml of water. I have reported to customer services and am seeking a replacement.
C*** 5/5 8 October 2025 John Lewis
I've had this machine for 3-4 weeks now. It took me maybe 3 days watching videos and guides until I got it figured out, but it makes really good espresso… I've encountered no issues so far, really enjoying the coffee.
A*** 1/5 26 May 2025 John Lewis
Deal breaker: Weak grinding activation switch will break - don't buy… It's a shame because this coffee machine is actually good but the grinder will stop working after 1 or 2 years max and it's super complicated to change the switch + Sage doesn't offer the switch in the spare parts.
F*** 1/5 12 February 2025 John Lewis
Bought a Sage Barista Express and had to return it and a replacement also had to be returned with the same fault. No option but to have my money back. What a shame as I was looking forward for this machine to make a good cup of coffee.

The Sage Barista Express remains a reliable and capable workhorse espresso machine that delivers great espresso and microfoam milk texture. Whilst newer alternatives like the Barista Pro offer faster thermojet heating and stepless grind adjustments, the Barista Express offers exceptional value for money, especially when purchased on sale. It remains well worth considering for anyone seeking a traditional, hands-on espresso experience at home.
YouTube · Comparison
The Sage Barista Express is an established espresso machine featuring an integrated 15-step grinder and a physical pressure gauge. While its thermocoil system takes around 30 seconds to heat up and its single-hole steam wand is slower than newer models, it heats up the brew group nicely and offers a manual pre-infusion of up to 60 seconds.
YouTube · Long-term experience
The presenter highly recommends this Sage coffee machine after years of daily use, stating it makes coffee that tastes better than a coffee shop. It heats up in approximately two seconds and features versatile adjustments for grind size and amount to match different beans.
YouTube · Long-term experience
The Breville / Sage Barista Express offers excellent coffee quality and hands-on barista-style control in a compact package that easily fits kitchen worktops. While the single boiler means you cannot pull espresso and steam milk simultaneously and the steam wand lacks high-end power, it provides exceptional value for its price. After four years of daily use and travel, it has proven durable and highly capable of producing cafe-standard coffee at home.
