The Sage Bambino Plus is a compact, fast-heating espresso machine with a 54 mm portafilter and a hands-free automatic milk frother. Owners widely praise its espresso and especially its milk drinks, its near-instant start and small footprint, which make it an easy first step into real espresso. Downsides are practical rather than performance-related: maintenance and descale cycles block brewing until completed, the light body slides when locking in the stiff portafilter, the drip tray is small, and the plastic tamper is basic. A minority of owners report steam wand or descale-mode faults, and long-term reliability data is not available. It suits latte and flat-white drinkers with limited counter space who are willing to pair it with a decent grinder; espresso hobbyists wanting manual steam control or a built-in grinder should look elsewhere.

Simple button controls and pressurised baskets make it beginner-friendly; comprehensive box contents and 2-year guarantee.
Things to consider
Cleaning and descale cycles cannot be skipped and stop you brewing or steaming until done.
Some owners report early failures, mainly the steam wand stopping heating or units stuck in descale mode.
Light machine slides when fitting the stiff portafilter; drip tray is small and can leak.

Basic plastic tamper, no printed manual, and a good grinder is needed for best results with fresh beans.
No manual steam knob and no built-in grinder; viewed as pricey by some buyers.
Who is it for, and who is it not for?
Good for
Latte, cappuccino and flat-white drinkers who want good milk texture without learning to steam manually.
First-time espresso users with limited counter space.
May not suit
Buyers wanting a one-box bean-to-cup solution, since it takes ground coffee only and benefits from a separate grinder.
Enthusiasts who want manual steam control or uninterrupted use without enforced maintenance cycles.
The UK brushed stainless steel Bambino Plus is SES500BSS4GUK1 (family BES500), EAN 9312432031516, sold by Sage UK, Amazon.co.uk, Argos, John Lewis and Currys.
Owners across Amazon, Argos and John Lewis frequently praise the espresso and milk drinks as café-standard; Expert Reviews found espresso consistently decent but lacking the body of pricier machines.
Many reviewers, including first-time espresso users, find it simple and quick to use; Expert Reviews calls it compact, easy and a superb place to start.
Several owners object that when the clean or descale lights come on the machine refuses to brew or steam until the cycle is done, and some report the cleaning cycle overflows the drip tray.
A minority of reviewers report early failures: machines not working on arrival, steam wand no longer heating milk after weeks, units stuck in descale mode, and replacements failing similarly; forum owners describe the auto steam wand cutting out or weakening over years.
Good results with fresh beans need a capable grinder and some dialling in; some owners call the plastic tamper inadequate and miss a printed manual explaining the flashing maintenance lights.
The combination of automatic milk texturing, fast heat-up and compact size makes it best suited to milk-drink users with limited counter space who want a step up from pod machines, rather than espresso enthusiasts wanting manual steam control.

Owners mostly love the coffee: they describe café-quality espresso and especially lattes and flat whites, thanks to the hands-free milk frother, and praise how quickly it heats and how little counter space it takes. Beginners find it forgiving, though getting the best from fresh beans needs a decent grinder and some dialling in. The main frustrations are the enforced cleaning and descale cycles that block brewing until completed, a light body that slides when locking in the stiff portafilter, a small or leaky drip tray, and a cheap plastic tamper with no printed manual. A minority report early failures, most often the steam wand stopping heating or the machine getting stuck in descale mode, sometimes repeated on replacements.

…when you hit 200 coffees and it's time for the machine to be cleaned, the machine is blocked until you clean it. That's it, no more coffee for you until the machine has been cleaned…

…It does need quite a bit of cleaning up - the drip tray after every use etc. and it's not cheap, but having a coffee better than any shop bought, every day, is such a wonderful treat, and I only wish I'd bought one earlier.

Makes a great cup of expresso and the automatic milk foam work works perfectly. Easy to use and easy to clean up. Compact attractive design fits nicely under the counter…

Had this for a few years now and has been pretty reliable. Perfect for people that want a decent coffee without having to take apart and tinker with a specialist machine… Perhaps the only issue is when it decides it needs a backflush or de-scale and the lights start to flash you need to get it done before you can make the next cup and it can take a few minutes to do.

It is a simple though fairly expensive machine… A little bit annoying is the occasional tendency for the portafilter dual filter to detach from the portafilter body and stick to the underside of the machine after coffee is made… The main thing is that the finished coffee is good so it is still a good machine.

If you're after perfection it's not a ten grand pro machine but takes the hassle out of dialing in. I'm very happy with it and it's just perfect for my morning latte.

Great coffee machine, solid build quality, pulls decent espresso once dialled in.

I am so happy with my new coffee machine. I can make speciality coffee shop standard coffee every morning.
D***1/526 August 2026Argos
Worst machine ever if you like your mornings coffee latte. You just pulled your shot and the next thing machine goes into cleaning mode mode were you CAN'T SKIP to do your milk fluff. I HATE THIS SO MUCH EVERY TIME.

The Bambino Plus extracts brilliant espresso and steams milk perfectly, but the out-of-the-box experience is frustrating. The included plastic tamper is useless, forcing an immediate upgrade. There is no printed manual, leaving you to guess what the cryptic flashing maintenance lights mean… A premium machine let down only by cheap finishing touches.
N***5/530 May 2026Argos
…The auto frother is great, allowing a bit of tidying up while it does its thing… My only real issue is it can be hard getting the portafilter on and off. It's a lightweight machine and can be hard to get a grip to stop the whole machine moving…

Quick and easy to use. Instant heat and very efficient milk frother. Great for making lattes.

…The main problem is the descale. The lights flash when the machine needs descaling, and there is no way to override this — it grinds to a halt…

Excellent coffee machine, simple and easy to use, compact yet still with all the features to make the coffees you want. Works well in our very small kitchen.

…It delivers fast results while taking up a small countertop footprint. My only gripe is the leaky drip tray - no matter what I do I always end up with a puddle of water under the machine…

I bought one of these in November. just over a month later I exchanged it because it went into descale mode and would not set back to normal mode after descaling. The second one did the same after little more than a month…

Sage (Breville) Bambino Plus Home Espresso Machine Review & Test
The Bambino Plus is a compact, feature-rich espresso machine boasting an impressive three-second start-up time and a powerful steam wand with automatic milk texturing. It delivers consistent temperatures ideal for medium to dark roasts and includes convenient on-demand hot water dispensing. However, its drip tray is notably small and requires daily emptying.
The Breville/Sage Bambino Plus is considered one of the best out-of-the-box espresso machines in the budget category, featuring rapid three-second heating and an impressive automated milk steam wand. However, it suffers from a lightweight, plastic-heavy build, a tiny drip tray that fills up quickly, and poor pre-infusion control compared to what the manual claims.
Breville Bambino Plus: The Honest Truth About This Espresso Machine
The Breville Bambino Plus is a compact espresso machine that delivers café-quality drinks with standard 9-bar brewing pressure and impressive automatic milk texturing. While it heats water rapidly and features a handy 3-way solenoid valve for clean puck disposal, it requires a good grinder and preheating routine to get the best results. It is lightweight and requires frequent drip tray emptying, but it remains an outstanding option for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
The Perfect Home Espresso Machine For Beginners? | Sage (Breville) Bambino Plus Review
The Sage Bambino Plus is a user-friendly and reliable espresso machine that delivers great espresso and features impressive auto-frothing and auto-purging milk steam capabilities. However, it lacks a built-in grinder and has an extremely small drip tray that fills up after just a couple of coffees. While questionable at its full £399 retail price, it is an excellent machine if purchased at a discount.
