The De'Longhi ECP35.31 is a compact, entry-level manual pump espresso machine. It has a 15 bar pump, takes ground coffee or E.S.E. pods, and has a steam wand for cappuccinos and lattes. Owners mostly praise the coffee and crema, the ease of use, the compact solid build and the value. The recurring complaint is water leaking inside the machine and tripping the electrics, sometimes around the end of the warranty. Some also find the portafilter fiddly to lock in and the instructions unclear for beginners. It suits someone who wants hands-on espresso on a budget and will descale regularly. Anyone wanting push-button drinks or whole-bean grinding should look at bean-to-cup machines. Long-term reliability is not independently confirmed, and big UK chains no longer stock it, so it is bought mainly from Amazon sellers, eBay sellers and smaller retailers.

What the features mean in everyday use.
A manual pump espresso machine with a 15 bar pump. It takes ground coffee or E.S.E. pods and comes with three filters. It has no grinder and cannot use whole beans.
The Adjustable Cappuccino System steam wand can froth milk for cappuccinos or steam it for lattes. The machine also dispenses hot water for americanos.
A compact machine at 185 x 240 x 305 mm (W x D x H), with a removable 1.1 L water tank and 1100 W input power.
It switches off automatically 9 minutes after use. The two-tier removable drip tray fits mugs or glasses up to 12 cm tall, and it can brew two espressos at once.
The coffee is the most praised point among UK Amazon and eBay reviewers. They mention good espresso and lattes with a rich crema, and some compare it to coffee-shop coffee at home.
Reviewers describe the machine as solidly made, compact enough for small kitchens and good-looking. Several say it is good value against pricier machines, coffee-shop spending or pods.
Three Amazon UK reviews describe water leaking inside or under the machine and tripping the household circuit breaker. One of these failures came a few months after the warranty ended. Two of the three buyers had bought returned or used units, and one received two faulty new units.
Owners say it needs regular cleaning and descaling, especially in hard-water areas. Some say it takes practice to dial in shots. One novice found the instructions misleading until they watched a YouTube video.
A few reviewers find the water tank small. One finds the water-level window hard to read.
Some owners report years of use. One Amazon UK reviewer has used it for years with regular descaling. A forum user says they have owned the same machine (sold elsewhere as ECP3420) for over 10 years.
Applies to the model family
The ECP35.31 is not currently listed at Argos, Currys, John Lewis or Homebase, and the Appliances Direct page has been removed. It is sold mainly by Amazon UK marketplace sellers, eBay sellers and smaller retailers, often as refurbished or repackaged stock.
Which? has tested the machine (first reviewed July 2016, last checked March 2024). The score and verdict are only available to subscribers.
Which? lists the guarantee as 1-2 years: De'Longhi gives premium pump machines two years and other models one year. Direct Vacuums sells it with a 12-month guarantee.
One reviewer likes that a normal-sized mug fits under the spout, not just small espresso cups.
One eBay buyer found the portafilter (filter holder) hard to lock in. The lightweight machine moved, and they had to hold it down with both hands.
Many eBay and Amazon UK reviewers call it simple and easy to use and clean. Several buyers of refurbished or pre-owned units report it working without problems.

Summarised from the 33 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 33.
Owners mostly like the coffee: rich espresso and good lattes with a nice crema, a steam wand that froths milk well, and a compact, solid machine that is easy to use and clean and fits small kitchens. Many see it as good value against coffee-shop drinks or pods, and buyers of refurbished units often say it works like new. The main complaint is reliability. Some buyers report water leaking inside the machine and tripping the household electrics, including one failure soon after the warranty ended, though some of these were returned or used units. Smaller gripes: the portafilter can be hard to lock in, the instructions confuse beginners, it takes practice to dial in, the tank is smallish and it needs regular descaling.

A great purchase! The machine is very well made and looks stylish in the kitchen. It makes rich, delicious espresso with a nice crema. The steam wand froths milk well, so it’s easy to make a cappuccino or latte at home. Simple to use and good value for money. Very happy with it.

I have used this for years now and it still works fine. You need to keep it clean and descaled. I know it does not look like a flashy designed coffee maker but it works 100%. thats all you need.

A few months after the warranty expired there was a critical internal issue. Something around the showerscreen did not work, flooded the entire coffees machine internally, shorted the electricity, had to replace a fuse in the fuse box. Anything positive I would have to say its down the drain now. 2 starts because despite that, it was an ok machine

I've had 3 or 4 De'Longhi coffee machines over the years. In my experience, they last about 3 years before conking out for one reason or another. … I must say that I am impressed with it. First and foremost, it makes a very good latte. The machine is solidly made and the controls are positive. I like that it will accommodate a "normal" sized mug, not just the tiny espresso cups. The water container isn't very large and although there's window supposedly for an easy visual check on the water remaining, it doesn't seem to work - a pity it's not illuminated. All-in-all, I'm satisfied and hope it last longer than the others I've had.
S*** 4/5 19 October 2020 Amazon Style Name: ECP35.31; the leaking units were Amazon Warehouse used machines
Let's start with the positives, this really does make a great cup of coffee. … The Crema is wonderful, and with regular cleaning and descaling it helps maintain a great taste over a period of time. … I had used it a few times before it started to keep tripping out, I then noticed water dripping from the underside of the main part machine, and a pool of water underneath. … 29/12/20 UPDATE - Well I ordered the 4th machine this time opting for a nearly new. I'm up to £116 now, but it seems to have done the trick. The machine is absolutely spotlesss and after 2 months it still doesn't leak!!

This review is for model ECP 35.31 only. … You get shop coffee at home, saving £3 a pop. It makes cappuchino and other variants, is easy to clean, has a removable tray that I have put away as I don't need. … The coffee tastes delicious with the crema it creates and the machine is compact, sturdy, not loud and very easy to clean. Definitely impressed and would recommend this model for ease of use and build quality. … One thing I will say is that if you are in a rush, and have no time, then Espresso makers are not for you as you need to spend a few minutes to make a lovely coffee.
R*** 1/5 18 May 2020 Amazon Style Name: ECP35.31
The first machine blew the circuit breaker when I turned it on. Left it overnight and it was then ok. The coffee and froth maker were superb however I found that I was unable to turn the machine off and had to cut the power at the plug socket. I also found a puddle of water underneath the machine after each use. … Second machine arrived which then activated the fuse box circuit breaker after a few seconds whenever I tried to heat the water up for coffee or the frother. … The electrical problems are worrying, and yes, I did try another plug point with the same result.

I have put no to the 2nd and 3rd questions though I haven't used it. I unpacked it, tried to put the filter holder into the machine and the whole machine moved. So you can't use this unless you are holding down the machine to fit the filter holder down with a lot of pressure. It did not want to fit. This is not my first machine. I was updating from an older machine which I regret not getting fixed now as that didn't;t need 2 hands to fit the filter holder.

My De Longhi packed up and after much research on different websites I found Direct Vacuums Ebay. … For a refurbished machine it was as good as new in its condition, and had no defects. … After a number of weeks usage I am more than pleased with the De Longhi machine, it works as good as new and the coffee tastes great.

The creator demonstrates pulling a shot and steaming milk for the first time using the DeLonghi ECP 35.31 espresso machine. The espresso produces a nice crema with a very enjoyable flavour, and the steam wand creates good silky milk foam. Overall, he is very impressed with the resulting drink, though he finds the included tamper pathetic and struggles to fit the portafilter when using a puck screen.

This video examines the De'Longhi ECP35.31 espresso machine alongside practical modifications and accessories to achieve barista-quality coffee on a budget. The presenter highlights limitations with the factory-supplied pressurised baskets and standard Panarello wand, showing how tweaks to the portafilter, steam wand, and baskets improve extraction and milk texturing. Testing also reveals that pre-purging the group head is necessary to achieve adequate brewing temperature.
