The Breville Prima Latte Luxe (VCF166) is a compact 19-bar espresso machine for ground coffee or ESE pods. An automatic milk system with an 800 ml fridge-storable tank makes lattes and cappuccinos at the touch of a button. Owners like how simple it is once learned, the froth and the tidy design. It also has cleaning and descaling programmes and dishwasher-safe parts. Against that, a notable share of recent buyer reviews report frothing that is weak or stops within weeks or months, and drinks that are not hot enough. There is only one strength setting and no cup warmer, and some find the automatic shots weak. It suits pod-machine upgraders who want easy milk drinks at a sale price, but not espresso enthusiasts or anyone who prioritises proven durability. No independent long-term reliability data is available.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
19-bar pump espresso machine with thermoblock heating and a portafilter (single/double baskets plus an ESE pod basket). It takes ground coffee or ESE pods, not beans.
Integrated automatic milk frother fed from a removable 800 ml milk tank with a lid, which can be stored in the fridge. Currys lists auto configuration by milk type, and Breville says it works with any milk, including oat.
One-touch programmes for single or double espresso, latte and cappuccino, plus manual espresso, manual milk and cleaning. There is a single coffee strength setting and an LED display with a progress bar.
Compact footprint of about 33.6 x 24.4 x 27.7 cm (H x W x D), around 5.8 kg, with a 1.4 L removable water tank.
Has cleaning and descaling programmes, a removable drip tray and dishwasher-safe parts. The moveable drip tray allows tall travel cups.
No cup warmer, no water filter, no app control and only one coffee strength setting.
UK retailers list a 2-year manufacturer's guarantee. Breville's own page says the 2-year replacement warranty needs registration within 90 days of purchase, while Which? lists 1 year.
The most common praise in owner reviews is that the one-touch operation is simple once set up, and several owners call it easy to set up.
Many owners are happy with the lattes and cappuccinos, describing thick froth and coffee-shop-style drinks at home.
A recurring complaint, mostly from Currys and Amazon buyers, is weak or no milk froth, uneven milk quantities, or the frother stopping working within weeks or months.
Several owners report the machine failing early: frothers stopping after weeks or 4-6 months, a replacement unit failing the same way, and one pump losing pressure after about a year.
A number of owners say the milk and coffee come out lukewarm or not hot enough; one says they microwave lattes afterwards.
Some owners found it confusing at first, especially those coming from pod machines, and some said the instructions were unhelpful. Most of these later found it easy, but one Amazon buyer still called it difficult to use.
A few owners found the automatic settings make weak-tasting coffee or a small single shot, and preferred the manual mode or extra shots.
Owners like the sleek, compact look, the fridge-storable milk tank and that alternative milks can be used.
Ratings differ by source: reviews syndicated by Breville, many from late 2023 and early 2025 including sample-program reviews, are almost all 4-5 stars, while verified Currys and Amazon buyer reviews from 2024-2026 contain most of the frothing and failure complaints.
Currys, Argos and Amazon UK all list it at £179.99 against a was/list price of £269.99, which is the price Breville UK shows.
Which? has tested the model (first reviewed Feb 2024, released Nov 2023), but its score and verdict are paywalled. No TechRadar or Trusted Reviews review was found.
Some owners say it saves money compared with buying coffee out, and one found it worth the sale price but would not pay more. Others call it expensive for what it delivers.

Summarised from the 74 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 74.
Owners who get on with the Prima Latte Luxe like how simple the one-touch latte and cappuccino buttons are once they have learned the routine. They praise the thick froth, the compact, stylish look and being able to keep the milk tank in the fridge, and some say it saves money on takeaway coffee. The main complaints, mostly from verified retailer buyers, are milk frothing that is weak, inconsistent or stops working within weeks or months, and drinks that come out lukewarm. A few report whole units or the pump failing, including replacement units. Some found setup confusing, especially coming from pod machines, and a few found the automatic shots weak and switched to manual mode. Opinions on value are split: good at a sale price, expensive if it fails.
Summarised from 74 reviews; 1 reviews about delivery, packaging or the seller were left out. The summary is drawn from opinions that recur in the reviews read; each theme shows how many reviews mention it. These counts are not a rate and do not apply to every unit.
74 unique text reviews (author+date+text dedupe): Breville UK 22 (s1,s2); Currys/Feefo 42 (s4: 20 Currys buyers, 22 Breville-syndicated; 6 rating-only excluded); Amazon UK 8 (s8); Argos 2 (8 of 10 read were Breville duplicates). I love this! I didn’t at first as it was a lot more faff than the pods I’ve been using. But now I’ve got the hang of it, it’s actually no more bother than a pod machine and the lattes it makes are fantastic! Love it!

Initially great coffee machine and easy to use, bought on offer so though got a good price, however machine didn’t last to long after 4 months milk frother stopped working, sent for repair and awful experience. Would not recommend for this reason as the repair and refund process has been a nightmare

I've used a Tassimo coffee machine for years for their Costa lattes and cafe au lait. … My only criticism is that even with the milk frother at it's default setting it still produces too much froth. Overall I think it's worth the price I paid but I wouldn't pay more.

Unlucky like many others the milk frother stopped working after 6 months. The refund process via Amazon involved sending the unit back, to then be deemed un-repairable, … I really wouldn’t recommend this machine or their refund process.

A*** 1/5 19 August 2026 breville.co.uk
I always had Breville coffee machines and this one is the worse, looking at other reviews my machine should be faulty Because I have no foam whatever milk I use and the latte and cappuccino options are working randomly, sometimes they pour a small amount of milk sometimes a lot never the same.
D*** 5/5 4 January 2026 breville.co.uk
I bought this machine after using another breville machine at my mum's and loved it. Decided on this one as it looked very simple to use and like it say's is "one touch". Still getting used to it and trying to find the right coffee I like but I have made some very nice latte and my wife was very impressed with it, I just want to keep making a coffee.
T*** E*** L*** 1/5 13 January 2025 breville.co.uk
I’ve had this coffee machine for about a year now (received it as a Christmas gift in late December 2023). Initially, it worked well, and I was pleased with the quality of espresso it produced. However, a year later, the pump no longer functions properly. The hot water doesn't pump powerfully enough, making it impossible to brew espresso. … Disappointing quality for what is supposed to be a premium coffee machine. I cannot recommend this product based on my experience.
G*** 1/5 5 January 2025 breville.co.uk
Disappointed, after using espresso machines for the last 8 years +, I decided to try this machine. Very disappointed, won't be keeping. Milk comes out luke warm at best, coffee is never hot enough. Would not recommend

This coffee machine was a little hard to work out at first! Couldn't get the machine to make a latte as the milk wouldn't come out and the instructions aren't very helpful with that issue! Now we've figured it out it is a brilliant machine, very sturdy and easy to use! …

Great coffee machine with the ability to use alternative milk, a little difficult to work out how to use if you are used to pod machines but once you’ve got the hang of it, it makes great coffee without difficulty. …

Oh my gosh this machine is amazing! Really easy to set up following the instruction manual. … Looks sleek and stylish on my kitchen side and makes lovely lattes and cappuccinos. … All the parts come off easily for cleaning and I like how you can store the milk container in the fridge. This will definitely be used daily!! 🤩🤩
