The Breville Barista Slimline VCF185 is an entry-level manual espresso machine built to fit tight worktops. At 160 mm wide, it still has a commercial-size 58 mm portafilter, a 15-bar pump, a PID-controlled thermoblock, preset single and double shots and a proper steam wand. Owners praise the espresso, the milk texturing and how easy it is to use and clean. The common niggles are a small drip tray, limited cup height, a stiff portafilter at first, a lightweight body and a loud steamer. It takes ground coffee only, so serious results need a grinder and ideally single-wall baskets. It suits beginners and small kitchens upgrading from pods. Those wanting robust build or bean-to-cup convenience should look elsewhere. A couple of early failures have been reported, and long-term reliability is not yet established.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
The UK model is the Breville Barista Slimline VCF185 in silver (stainless steel and plastic), EAN 5060853630767. Breville UK lists only this one finish.
The machine is 160 mm wide (328 x 160 x 308 mm), noticeably narrower than typical espresso machines.
It uses a 58 mm commercial-size group head and portafilter, a 15-bar pump and a PID-controlled thermoblock.
Breville says it offers preset single (30 ml) and double (60 ml) volumetric shots, a manual pour, pre-infusion and extraction at 92°C.
It works with ground coffee only and has no built-in grinder. The supplied baskets are dual-wall (pressurised) types.
Most reviewers across Argos, Breville UK, Currys and Amazon.co.uk praise the espresso's flavour and crema. Two experienced owners say it falls a little short of a Sage machine or a professional setup.
Reviewers often say it fits small kitchens and worktops without taking up much space.
Reviewers describe it as simple to operate and easy to clean. Some note a mild learning curve with grind and tamp, and fiddly priming at first set-up.
Many reviewers say the steam wand makes good, creamy milk for lattes and cappuccinos. One Amazon reviewer found steam slow to heat, and another needed a thermometer to get milk hot enough.
Some reviewers report noise: a loud 'screaming' steamer, knocking when frothing, or a noisy start-up.
Several reviewers find the drip tray small and quick to fill. One says tall latte cups don't fit with the tray in place.
A few owners find the portafilter or baskets stiff and tight at first. Others note the light machine twists when locking in the portafilter, a plastic-insert handle, and a slightly plasticky feel.
Two Amazon.co.uk reviewers say their machine stopped working after about 3–6 months; one says Amazon's repair partner could not fix it. Amazon's own review summary also flags reliability as a concern. This is a small sample and does not give a failure rate.
Most Argos reviews, and the Breville-sourced reviews on Currys, were collected through Breville promotions or product-tester schemes. They are almost all 4–5 stars, while Amazon.co.uk's open reviews include a significant share of 1-star ratings. The overall picture is likely more positive than typical owner experience.
It has a 2-year (24-month) replacement warranty. Breville asks owners to register within 90 days of purchase to activate the extended 2-year cover.
Experienced users recommend buying single-wall baskets, a milk thermometer and ideally a burr grinder to get the best results. One reviewer says the double-spout spacing is too wide for small espresso cups.
Several reviewers consider it good value for the price compared with pricier machines.
TechRadar and T3 covered it only as launch news, describing it as an affordable entry-level, beginner-friendly model for smaller kitchens. No hands-on test score was found.

User experience
See the common points first, then read the original reviews yourself.
Summarised from the 50 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 50.
Owners mostly like the Barista Slimline for its genuinely slim footprint, tasty espresso with good crema, and a steam wand that textures milk well for lattes and cappuccinos. They find it simple to use and clean, and several think it good value. Complaints are about everyday details: a small drip tray, tall cups not fitting, a stiff portafilter at first, a light body that twists when you lock the handle in, and a loud steamer. Some note that you need pre-ground coffee or your own grinder. Enthusiasts suggest single-wall baskets and a milk thermometer for better results. Two Amazon owners report the machine failing within months. Many of the glowing reviews were collected through Breville promotions, so expect a less uniformly positive experience.

Avoid at all costs. I had a sage dual boiler for 7 years, when it broke I was looking for a new machine. … The machine is really poorly made, the steam wand heat up time is very slow and it stopped working all together after 6 months. It was sent to Amazon's repair partner and they couldn't fix it so I have been told I'll receive a refund.

Bought this coffee machine in November of last and the motor has packed up and stopped working. … The coffee machine is not kicking any coffee out and instead the water is ending up in the tray.

Good quality, esp for the price. Replaced a Sage Barista Express, and while the crema isn't quite as good, the coffee is good.
P*** 5/5 11 June 2026 Amazon
… It turns out a rich espresso with a good crema, and the steam wand handles milk texturing for lattes perfectly well. … My only minor complaint is that because the unit is so narrow and lightweight, you do need to hold the top of the machine to steady it when locking the portafilter handle into place, otherwise the whole thing tends to twist on the counter.
S*** 5/5 16 November 2025 Amazon
I love an underdog - It has temp control, pre infusion, and as a pro barista I reckon I can make a better coffee than many would make with a 600 machine … Porta filter handle - still the budget style with plastic insert, not a true handle but for this price works very well
P*** 5/5 4 November 2025 Amazon
… There is a slight knocking sound when using the milk frother, and if you don't manage the steam properly, it can get a bit loud when frothing milk, similar to professional machines. However, once you get the technique down, it becomes quite silent after a few seconds. …

If you buy one I suggest getting a milk jug thermometer…it’s much easier to get the correct temperature of the milk. The machine does not come with one but suggests you do the milk based on the temp the jug gets in your hand. I tried it an even when the jug became to hot to handle the milk wasn’t quite warm enough to drink…

This was a fantastic purchase for Christmas and definitely worth it. This machine is compact, yet powerful, and creates a fantastic cup of coffee. The espresso is the perfect temperature and makes a rich layer of crema.

Great space saving design that made a really smooth latte! The only reason I gave 3 stars was the noise of the steamer when frothing the milk - it's a very loud screaming noise. Apart from that, I was impressed.
S*** T*** 4/5 23 June 2025 Currys Breville product-tester review shown on Currys
Setting it up was a bit fiddly particularly the priming but once that was done it was really easy to make lovely coffee. Latte cups are too tall to fit under with the drip tray in situ and it leaks a little if you remove the tray…

first purchase of a machine .we hardly use it .its ok for cappuccinos etc
S*** 4/5 5 November 2025 Currys
Compact machine which fits perfectly on my counter. Easy to use and makes great coffee. Like other reviews I would agree the tray is on the small side, minor complaint tho.
S*** 5/5 26 January 2026 Currys
I am really impressed with this machine. It didn’t take long to learn how to use it and I’ve been able to make decent coffee using it. It was very stiff to use the first time but loosened quickly. Pleased with my purchase and would recommend.

… The only minor issue I’ve encountered is with the coffee puck — it doesn’t always come out cleanly after brewing. However, when I switched to a third-party portafilter basket, the puck released perfectly with a single tap…

We absolutely love this item, its size, its clean lines, its features and let’s not forget the all important fact….with the help of quality beans it makes quality coffee!
Customer 5/5 26 October 2025 Currys
Great machine to replace my pod machine which packed up after several years of use. Produces delicious coffee with the milk steamer/frother as well.
B*** 3/5 15 May 2026 breville.co.uk
Great machine but disappointing with the espresso. Dual portafilter with very large space between two spouts makes impossible to fill up small espresso cup.
r*** 4/5 19 July 2025 breville.co.uk
… The filter baskets are very tight and difficult to remove but not impossible. The stainless steel milk jug is obviously very easy to clean. The drip tray is a bit small and needs emptying quite often.
p*** 5/5 20 August 2025 breville.co.uk
I love this coffee machine, it's a nice compact model which fits nicely on my kitchen worktops without taking up top much space.
s*** 5/5 16 August 2025 breville.co.uk
I was apprehensive that a slimline machine could match my bigger machine, but I needn't of worried. The design is amazing and feels very durable. Easy to clean and maintain as well.
R*** 5/5 3 August 2026 breville.co.uk
… In terms of performance, it produces reliably smooth espresso with good crema and a surprisingly powerful steam wand for its size. The learning curve is mild; once you get used to dialing in the grind and tamp, the results become very consistent.
A*** 5/5 21 August 2026 Argos Syndicated from Breville.co.uk
Cleaning is straightforward. Steam wand makes a great creamy, frothy, milk for a latte. Grinds the beans well. It is somewhat noisy, but nothing abnormal for an at home coffee machine!
D*** 4/5 17 August 2026 Argos Syndicated from Breville.co.uk
Only downside is it requires you to pre grind your coffee beans…

I've been really enjoying my Breville Barista Slimline espresso machine it looks sleek and stylish without taking up too much space on the worktop. It's easy to use, makes lovely, barista-style coffee and heats up quickly.
