The Krups Vertuo Next (XN910N40, matte black) is a slim, one-button Nespresso Vertuo pod machine. It reads each capsule's barcode and brews five sizes, from a 40 ml espresso to a 414 ml Alto, with a 1.1 L tank and two-minute auto-off. Owners like its simplicity, the mug-sized coffees and its neat looks, and it takes tall mugs. On the downside, it uses only Vertuo pods, which are pricier and harder to find, and it has no milk frother. Many owners find the coffee lukewarm or the brewing noisy, and some report early faults; long-term durability is not independently tested. It suits people who want easy, consistent black coffee in larger cups, but not those wanting built-in milk drinks, cheap pods or very hot espresso.
Before you buy
What the features mean in everyday use.
The machine accepts only Nespresso Vertuo capsules. It does not take Original-line Nespresso pods or other pod formats.
Krups lists five cup sizes: Espresso 40 ml, Double Espresso 80 ml, Gran Lungo 150 ml, Mug 230 ml and Alto 414 ml. The capsule barcode sets the brew automatically.
There is no built-in milk system. Milk drinks need a separately sold Aeroccino frother or the Vertuo Next & Milk bundle (XN911B40).
The machine is a narrow 140 mm wide but 429 mm deep, with a 1.1 L removable water tank and an integrated used-capsule container.
Reviewers at all four stores most often praise how simple the machine is: one button, capsule recognition and a quick brew.
Many reviewers are pleased with taste and crema, especially in the larger mug sizes. Some find long coffees or certain blends disappointing, and a few describe the top layer as foam rather than crema.
Reviewers often call the design sleek and say it fits small kitchens. A couple of Nespresso-syndicated reviews on the Currys feed call it large.
A recurring complaint at every store is lukewarm or quickly cooling coffee. Others say it is hotter than their previous Nespresso.
Noise during the spinning brew is a frequent complaint. Some owners say it is quieter than older machines.
Owners repeatedly say pods are expensive and mostly bought from Nespresso, with limited supermarket or third-party choice. One Amazon reviewer reports finding cheaper supermarket own-brand Vertuo-compatible pods.
A minority of reviews describe early failures: leaks on first use, lukewarm output after days, repeated capsule misreads with a flashing light, or failure within months. Amazon's own topic summary also leans negative on reliability. These reports cannot be read as a failure rate.
A few owners find the capsule lid lock stiff or the hatch clunky. One mentions difficulty with arthritic hands.
The adjustable or removable cup support takes tall mugs and flasks. One owner switched from a Vertuo Pop for this reason.
TechRadar (4/5) found it creates consistently smooth espressos and americanos and is very easy to use and almost mess-free. It criticised expensive pods, the separate milk frother and awkward pod recycling. Which?'s verdict on the Magimix version is behind a paywall.
Applies to the model family
Auto off after 2 minutes of non-use, with 0.4 W in off mode.
Krups says the body is made from 54% recycled plastic and is a repairable product for 10 years.
Currys, Argos and John Lewis list the machine at the same price. Amazon.co.uk marketplace sellers undercut them, with low stock.
Applies to one variant
Some owners say the machine asks for cleaning or descaling often, or that descaling is complicated to follow.
The model dates from around 2020–2021. No independent long-term reliability data was accessible, so durability rests on scattered owner reports.

Summarised from the 174 reviews we read. A review can mention several points, so the theme counts can add up to more than 174.
Owners mostly like how simple the Vertuo Next is: drop in a capsule, press one button and the machine reads the pod and brews the right size. Many praise the coffee, especially mug-sized drinks, and the slim, modern look that suits small kitchens and tall mugs. The most common complaints are lukewarm coffee, a noisy brewing cycle and pricey pods bought mostly from Nespresso. Opinions on noise and temperature are split; some find it quieter or hotter than their old machine. A smaller group reports early faults such as leaks, capsule misreads or failure within weeks or months. A few find the capsule lock stiff, descaling confusing, or the coffee topped with foam rather than true crema.
Summarised from 174 reviews; 4 reviews about delivery, packaging or the seller were left out. The summary is drawn from opinions that recur in the reviews read; each theme shows how many reviews mention it. These counts are not a rate and do not apply to every unit.
Unique text reviews: Amazon 8, Currys/Feefo 56 (other models excluded), Argos 10, John Lewis 100 (newest first, pages 1-5) = 174. 13 Currys rating-only entries not counted. I bought it for my son for uni and he loves it and got some free coffee pods, now he buys the refills from the supermarket own brand and they're cheaper and as good so good value and is compact

Do not buy this rubbish. This is the second Virtuo Next I've had, both stopped working in less than a month. It literally pours 1 successful coffee for every 10 expensive pods wasted. It worked reliably for exactly 8 days, now it's going back as defective.

On first uses of this machine I would probably have given it a one star and returned it … first few pods it just wouldn't play ball. … The first thing you come to realise is that in extracting the coffee, it introduces air, to produce a foam rather than crema on the top of the coffee. … the coffee itself especially for sizes below mug size tend to be … lets say less than hot …

As someone who loves a nice coffee, on a daily basis, this machine is brilliant. It's so easy to use, makes a lovely coffee, with numerous styles and flavours, and the price was excellent. We love it …

I chose this one because of the price and size … The machine itself is sleek and compact. It is EXTREMELY easy to set up and use. … this machine can only be used with Nespresso Virtuo pods, not Nespresso original or any other brand … I'm an ex barista and I'm really impressed with this little machine. Buy one!

Best maternity leave purchase Slick and quick with excellent coffee Really good value signing up for the 50 free pods too
M*** 3/5 8 October 2024 Currys
It's very convenient but it might take a while to find a pod that you like. I think it is much more successful with short coffees than longer ones. I've gone down to a couple of double espressos that work very well. I have found some long coffees pretty much undrinkable. Don’t want to be too negative because the short ones are pretty good and very easy to use.

Good Points: Really good coffee Improvement Points: The lock is really stiff, especially if you have arthritic hands.

Improvement Points: Doesn't seem to heat the water up, chocolate fudge capsules are not what I thought

Good Points: It makes coffee Improvement Points: The coffee is luke warm The machine is very loud The capsules are very difficult to find, no coffee for Christmas, the reason I bought it!

Great machine, ideal if you have a small kitchen, while it's not quiet I've had noisier Nespresso machines in the past. Makes a great crema on an espresso. … Only downside is that you can only get Nespresso pods as far as I can see.

Good Points: I am a total coffe addict so I was really excited when this arrived. Initial cleaning instructions were really clear and only took a few minutes. First cuppa was lovely, good temperature and again instructions very clear. The machine is not too loud and fits very nicely in my kitchen. It looks really smart and sleek. Very happy …

It's super quick, easy to use and the range of pods is great. I would point out if you're used to fresh coffee the taste does take a while to get to used to but definitely a great addition to my coffee collection!
a*** 5/5 27 October 2021 Argos Promotional review via nespresso-uk
It's super easy to use and all of the pods I tried were so delicious… it does ask to be cleaned quite often but that's fine with me… The only thing I'd change is for the temperature of the drinks to be hotter…
f*** 5/5 20 October 2021 Argos Promotional review via nespresso-uk
…sleek and attractive design, though I wish I'd got the matte black now I've seen them all in store… It is a bit noisy but not too loud for my flatmates… at the moment you can only get the pods via nespresso… pricier but delicious. …

Absolutely love this machine, it delivers great tasting coffee in minutes… set up was really easy and it's not overly bulky either, it looks sleek and fits in with my kitchen well.
E*** 5/5 28 February 2026 John Lewis
I really like it. It looks very nice in the kitchen. It makes the coffee I like and I have persuaded my best friend and my mother to get this machine. The descaling is a bit complex, but if you Google and find somebody telling you how it's great.

Machine failed after 3 months , Nespresso offered repair or refurbished replacement, opted for repair came back still broken
M*** 5/5 13 October 2025 John Lewis
Neat design with ease of set up and operation with a variety of cup sizes. Although not the most compact of coffee pod machines the design is sleek and modern looking. … I previously enjoyed the original pod range and the Vertuo flavours are even better. All in all a great value product.
E*** 2/5 30 August 2025 John Lewis
very attractive machine, but very noisy and the coffee comes out cold am so disappointed about that
K*** 5/5 26 August 2025 John Lewis
I have had a Nespresso machine now for more than 10 years … The set up was easy and linking to the App worked easily … The drinks are hotter, it takes the wider range of capsules but like all machines is a bit noisy until you get used to it …
S*** 1/5 11 April 2025 John Lewis
Coffee comes out lukewarm. Great looking machine. Unable to find pods in supermarkets, have to buy online from them, expensive and limited choice. Avoid!
M*** 5/5 17 March 2025 John Lewis
Old Nespresso broke, tried a different machine first (Vertuo Pop) but a standard mug doesn't fit without taking the drip tray off, so purchased this instead. This machine fits all size mugs and flasks! Quieter than previous model too. Very pleased!
C*** 1/5 2 January 2025 John Lewis
This machine was bought for me as a Christmas gift … Great initially, then after 4 days would only produce lukewarm coffee. Because it is outside the 30 day purchase period, Nespresso won't exchange or refund and instead will only offer a repair. …
N*** 1/5 20 September 2023 John Lewis
… this machine has less features, brewed cold coffee even if you leave it longer to warm up … You can only buy these pods from Nespresso at 60p each, that's a big inconvenience. … Cold coffee was not acceptable so returned. How can Nespresso go backwards in technology?
M*** C*** 1/5 29 December 2022 John Lewis Syndicated from tefal.co.uk
Purchased in November as a Christmas gift when used for the first time a few days after Christmas it immediately leaked everywhere from the bottom and didn't work. Not impressed now left with a coffee machine that is useless, would not recommend.

This video examines a severe water leakage problem with the Nespresso Vertuo Next after three weeks of use. The reviewer disassembles the machine to investigate the issue, discovering that water leaks from the spindle area and runs into internal electronic components. Consequently, the verdict is to avoid this machine and opt for an OriginalLine Nespresso or a traditional espresso machine instead.
YouTube · Comparison
The Nespresso Vertuo Next offers higher capacity than the smaller Pop model, featuring a 1.1-litre water tank and a larger used capsule container. It can brew up to five drink sizes including a full 535 ml carafe pour-over style coffee, and easily accommodates tall travel mugs. However, it requires more counter space, is more expensive, and the lid locking mechanism requires two hands to close.
YouTube · Long-term experience
The reviewer highlights the Nespresso Vertuo as an easy-to-maintain machine that produces cafe-quality coffee. It features customisable volume settings and a durable, compact design that fits comfortably under most kitchen cabinets. Overall, it has been a reliable addition to the household and significantly improved their coffee experience.
